Hi AndrewC & Chris: Donald Sutherland was born in St. John, New Brunswick, to Dorothy Isobel (née McNichol) and Frederick McLea Sutherland (Wikipedia), it will be quite a shocker if he's not!
Keifer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland was born in London, England to Canadian actors, Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, but grew up, for the most part, in Canada. Shirley's father, Tommy Douglas was born October 20, 1904, in Falkirk, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1919 with his family. He was a Baptist minister who became Premiere of Saskatchewan. (Source: THE Canadian Encyclopedia)
Two years ago, Tommy Douglas was selected as the single-most important Canadian for bringing universal health care to Canada. There was a biographical series where different Canadians and their accomplishments were presented weekly. At the end of the series the CBC allowed people to call in and vote for the person they thought was the greatest Canadian. Mr. Douglas beat out previous prime ministers, and now is touted as the greatest Canadian NEVER to be Prime Minister!
Sort of the "thinking person's version" of Canadian Idol. That was great fun and had a tremendous following.
May be your associate is researching them for the next WDYTYA Canada
