Greetin's all
I have really enjoyed reading all the replies so far.
When I posted the topic, I intensionally used the term "Scotch" to see what response it would get.
I have several scots dictionaries, and can find no reference to the term Scotch, only used to describe whisky, broth, eggs etc.
Everyone refers to the term as pertaining to all things Scottish.
Mibbie someone on here, with more knowledge of the so called "Mither tongue" wid enlighten us.
It is like Lallans and Doric.
Kin oany o' yoosyins tell me how come Doric is now only associatit wey the north east nooadays?
And while ah um oan here.
How cum naeone caws themsels Australian or NZ Scots, while I get punters frae across the waater describing thaem as American or Canadian Scots.
Oany insights wid be appreciatit

What makes you Scotch

:D Well now I have lived in England for 57 years and I am Still Scottish. I think it act it and speak it. Why? well I don't know something in my mothers milk, and merlot (the wine?) your little quote 'Heres tae us and wha's like us' brought a tear tae ma een. I remember my old dad, that was his favourite toast, holding up the amber stuff at all occasions and he held up a gie few. Sentimental ? very likely, perhaps thats what makes me a Scot still.

Hi folks,
I've a few dictionaries that mention Scotch as meaning Scottish.
But since starting the Family History, i don't believe everything that i read....
--
One dictionary (printed in England about 1953) says -
Scotch, skoch, adj. a form of Scottish or Scots, in common use even among the Scottish dialect speakers,
though disliked or resented by many Scotsmen: applied esp. to products of Scotland.

It also mentions Scotchwoman, Scotchness, and Scotchy; a nickname for a Scotsman....aye, just try it!
And it says the Scotch fiddle was "the itch" (that's a new one for me anyway).

Whilst browsing in a Glasgow bookstore, i noticed a Scots Dictionary in...the Foreign Section... :? Grrrr!

Scottish 100% well maybe the odd bit of Irish.I knew there was one line that came from Ireland-Thomas Torrance merchant seaman.
However as I have traced my roots deeper then more lines are suprisingly springing from Ireland.
I think I have ancestors from every area in Scotland-from my Ross & Cromarty Ross's my Kincardineshire McPhersons,Perth Waddells.Borders/Lanark Veitches.Midlothian/Border Scotts.
The most surprising was the many lines from all over Ayr/Wigton.I even have a Falkirk GGGGreat-Grandfather.Argyll,Dunbartonshire.
No trace of the Spanish Sailor that both sides of the family claim.
I love living in Middsx where I am now but my heart beats a different time when I come home & Scotland will always be home.
My Aunt who has lived in USA for 45 years says she feels like Nobody's Child.Doesn't feel American but Scotland has changed so much from the place she was born & raised that she feels a stranger there too.
I will be cheering for England this World Cup-to please the twelve year old.
NEVER EVER SCOTCH SCOTS,SCOTTISH BUT SCOTCH YOU DRINK.
I am very sentimental & I think that is imbibed with your Mothers milk!!!
