Marilyn,

I cannot believe that you have only just awakened to the fact that Skype exists! Told you about it yonks ago! I obviously have no talent as a publicity agent.

Andrew,
In spite of arm-twisting by members of the family, I've refused to install a web cam. Horrible invention. Late one morning, I was wandering around the living room while my cousin was on Skype on his computer. 'Who on earth is that person in a dressing gown?' enquired his friend.

Best wishes

Catriona
Hello Catriona

Now that you mention it, I thought it sounded familiar. Can't say that I blame you for not wanting the web cam set up. Truly I don't need folk looking at me while I have rollers in my hair.

Regards
Marilyn

Hi
Haven't used Skype but did try using another Audio/webcam system some years ago and ofund that when chatting with someone in the Antipodes their speakers were rebroadcasting my words through their mike back to me, it was quite off putting particularly with the time delay over 21,000 mls., it was like the differences between terrestrial radio/digital radio/on line radio.

Of course a headset and boom mike would obviate the problem.
I'm a Cousin - are you? http://www/LostCousins.com

I can´t recommend Skype too much, with bairns at university either in Finland or USA it saves us a fortune in ´phone calls. Easy to set up, but we have so far avoided the webcam option despite some pressure, as I tend to check on recent posts on TS while chatting away!.................

´Phoning a land line abroad is also incredibly cheap, so go for it.

Guid Skypeing,

Thrall

Hi all,
We have been using the AIM (or ichat) video option for years to communicate with my deaf mother. She can see us (and we her) which cheers her up no end. We open a text box also next to the video screen and type in our words in large font so she can "hear", then she talks back to us. In our case, a telephone conversation was impossible because of her deafness- it has been a real help to her since my father died.

If you don't want to be seen, just close the video window! Or unplug the camera. You have to accept the call in order to be seen, so there is really no danger of accidentally having your image broadcast across the world
Regards,
Sarah

Skype

Post by Maud Jarvis » Tue Jul 10, 2007 12:30 pm

My son put Skype on or computer after haring about from my cousin (he lives in Southampton) we must be doing something wrong though, we can see him on the other end, but somehow we cannot manage to arrange our end for him to see us!

Cousin thinks we may not have enough power on our puter, though my son has tried various combinations we just cannot get it right, however, it does not really matter,we can long natters without having to pay a big phone bill, so thats the good part anyway, althoug it would be nice if cousin could also see us too.

I now have a new laptop and we are wondering if it would be successful to try it on that, this laptop has windows vista, so can anyone tell me,if it would be ok to fit up skype in that?

I have not visited the board for a while now, my son has been having a rough time recently. After having had some considerabe pain for some time, and problems peeing, it was discovered after a scan, that he had a
very large bladder stone. He has now been operated on and the stone removed, it was enormous, 7x5cm! he is still having check ups at the hospital, his next one will be in a couple of weeks, to see if his bladder is holding the correct volume or something, so keeping our fingers crossed that all wil be ok.

I would not like to see him go through any more of the problems he had, unfortunately he had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic and was sick and retching for quite some time afterwards, he is normally quite slim and cannot afford really to lose weight, but he was unable to eat for a few weeks and the weight just fell off him, at present he has to wear a tight belt to hold up his trousers! fortunately he is now eating normally again and has gained 5 lbs, already, but still a long way to go yet, he needs to get back over another stone in weight.

However, now that he is on the road to recovery, I hope to get back to more research again. I did have some fantastic news a few weeks ago. I had been searching for my gt aunt`s death both in Scotland & England without success, Then to my great delight, I was informed that she had emigrated to Canada in 1903, and not only that, she had a son I had not known about, also on the same ship with her was another person I had been searching for, this was another brick wall broken down.

I do`nt want to relate a big long story, but finish with the great news that I am now in contact with her grandson in Canada and he has sent me loads of photos, which unfortunately have given rise to more questions about another missing ancestor, neither of us know the answer, so now another search is under way!

Sorry I have veered off the skype subject, thats one of my problems, I blether on too much once I begin to natter about the ancestors!!
Sorry about that, please forgive me.
Seeking any descendents from Ezekiel McCulloch, Port Glasgow, also Neil Barr (Greenock)

Nothing to forgive, Maud. Hope your son continues to improve, and let me be the first to offer a free stone or two to help out. If only it were that simple - those of us who have, it don't want it; and those that need it, can't get it.

Frances

I've had Skype installed since last Novenber, but find it very difficult to use because I have dial-up and not a high-speed connection. I only hear every few words. So I never use it anymore... :(
