Hi Heather, and thank you for that. I think I remember the curved steps now you mention them, but didn´t look further. We were so fortunate to meet George Paton, an octogenarian and the organist of the church in Innellan, who described local life for us and how he landed in a bus accident between Dunoon and Innellan on leave from the RAF. Having lost most of the use of one of his hands, he was not considered suitable for further duty and thus was the only one of his comrades to survive the second war.
Funny (?) you should mention POWs as I have recently been aware that the irons I use in golf were bought by my father on returning from three years as a guest of Adolf's in various camps in Europe. Somehow I feel reluctant to renew them with their Tom Auchterlonie emblem, though I expect it might help my scores.
On a lighter note, glad you enjoyed your visit. It always seems a relaxed place with a mild if slightly damp "genre" for want of a better word.
Good hunting,
Thrall

Hi again
Ardnadam pier is in Sandbank as it is all now called although it was strictly speaking Ardnadam. It was used by the American Navy while they were here to bring in and out the liberty boats.
I was there only yesterday but can't remember if the pier is still there!! I think it is. In fact I think they bring wood in there now. There's a lot of work going on building a marina in the loch. Where the pier hotel was the Americans used as a leisure complex and I'm pretty sure it is no more.
I'll ask Mum about it as I'm sure she knows what's what.
Some of my lot lived pretty near there so they probably knew your lot!
