Hi Wilma
I have the Bennies you are talking about in my tree also. Have tons of info about George and Isabella including some fab stuff about some of the kids that went to Australia. Let me know if you would like to exchange info.

Hi Catriona,

Nope, no mention. Sorry.

The Hardies mentioned are:

William Hardie & Janet Lyon (1808)

James Hardie & Agnes Mitchell (1823)

Alexander Hardie & Janet Aitken and children

John Stirling and Margaret Russell (1812)

Robert Stirling and Ann Salmon (1838)

As you probably know, the dates can refer to when the couple bought the lair, the death of one of them or most times sadly, the date of one of their children's death.

I looked in Muiravonside too but nothing there either.

Anne

Lainey and Anne

Thanks for looking.

The John STIRLING and Margaret RUSSELL are my 3rd GGrandparents.

Will look forward to hearing about anything new you learn about the HARDIES.

Best wishes

Catriona,

I found this inscription amongst my mountains of MI's:

Erected to the memory of HENRY REID, farmer Haining Valley
Who died 17th June 1853 aged 64 years
MARY FORTYE his wife died 27th March 1822 aged 22 years
PETER REID their son died 25th December 1867 aged 47 years
ANNE REID, sister of Henry Reid died 1st January 1862 aged 80 years
JANET HARDIE his wife died 14th December 1879 aged 85 years
JOHN REID (son of Henry Reid and Janet Hardie) died 29th June 1847 aged 23 years
HENRY REID (their son) died 13th September 1830 aged 4 1/2 years
JAMES BRYSON REID died 2nd December 1870 aged 3 years
THOMAS KEIR REID died 25th December 1870 aged 6 years
HELEN COCKBURN BRYSON wife of Peter Reid died 17th December 1912 aged 86 years

The stone is in Muiravonside Churchyard and must be in pretty good 'nick' as I seem to have managed to get all the details. Unfortunately this was in the days before I had a digital camera so I don't have a photo.

I intend to try and get to Muiravonside soon and get photos - it's on my ever increasing list of 'to do's", or perhaps if Lainey is in the area . . . . ( a bit cheeky - volunteering someone else!!)

Hi Anne
Normally I would just say yes I would get there at some point soon, but unfortunately rugby season is beginning, so I am minus my lifts there and back! Both husband and son disappear most of Saturdays, and I dislike going to churchyard cemeterys on a Sunday incase I offend anyone by taking photos! However, if the chance arises I will go back and let you know. To be honest though, as Hardie is a main line name for me, I think if there were any more, I would have already taken the photos...........but could have missed something.

Anne

Thanks for the M.I. The lady doesn't appear to be my Janet HARDIE, but the information is worth filing and looking into further

Best wishes

Hi all,
Whereabouts is the churchyard? If I get a chance to get there again, I'll go and look for it.

I don't actually know Muiravonside at all - only the bit nearest to Linlithgow. But I think I should take some time photographing stones there also.

Where did you get the MIs from? I don't recall seeing Muiravonside MIs - I have the burials, though that's pretty scanty, and I have West Lothian MIs which has some of my people in Linlithgow (and I can do lookups in that if needed).

Hi Jenny
Muiravonside is not too far from Linlithgow, between Maddiston and Whitecross. I dont drive and you would end up in the middle of nowhere with my directions!, but on any map, if you look at the union canal and follow that from L'gow back towards Polmont you will see Muiravonside cemetery. There is a good parking area, then stones around the church itself, then another 3 parts to it all more or less joining together.
Hope this helps

Hi Lainey,
I think I've found the cemetary on the map - on the road that goes from Linlithgow Bridge up the hill beside the Bridge Inn, through Whitecross (I think it is) to Vellore. I drove up that road a bit, and had I known that the cemetary was just off it I'd have gone a bit further.

Do you know of any map online that shows the farm names?

Hi Jenny,

The pre-1855 MI's have been published and are available to buy in umpteen places. Probably the cheapest option is via the internet where you can compare prices. Stirlingshire has been done in two halves - east and west, Muiravonside and Polmont being in the Stirlingshire East Book.

If this is something you'd be interested in, the isbn no. for the East Book is: ISBN 0 901061 82 4
and for the West Book is: ISBN 0 901061 83 2

They are a fantastic resource as many of the stones which were transcribed back in the late sixties/early seventies are either no longer there or have now eroded so badly or engulfed with moss and lichens that they're completely illegible.

A wee word of warning though, there are errors throughout these books which is obviously quite understandable - they didn't have the luxury of taking digital photographs which they could enhance to try and de-cypher some of the inscriptions.

Anne

P.S. I transcribed the Churchyard a couple of years ago so I've got a note of a few more recent stones if you think there's any which might be 'yours'
