Anner

I hope this doesn't throw another spanner in the works in your search for your lang deid punter.

As he had deserted the army, have you any evidence that he also deserted his family?

As he had deserted and the army never found him, it is possible that he changed his name either to one linked to his/her family, or he adopted a completely different alias, and died and was buried under the name he was known by locally. Remember! deserters weren't exactly welcomed with open arms in communities back then. There was really no such thing as conscientious objectors, they were usually classed in the white feather category! There is also the slim possibility that he rejoined the army under his new name and may even had a new wifey to boot. As he died before 1917 (?) he may have rejoined to fight in WWI under pressure from his peers, family or community and died in battle under his new name. In which case your chances of finding him are not good. But then his age would probably exclude him from serving in WWI. Sorry about the ramble but just trying to think

Hi Stewie,
Thank you fir your reply. Any ideas are welcomed.
Robert deserted in 1890 a year after his daughter was born and his wife Janet was with him, his two children are found living with grandparents on both the 1891 and 1901 census. So I think he and his wife were still "in hiding".
I have been up to Scotland and visited the Mitchell and found his wife on her own at Hopehill Street in 1920 and he isnt with her.
On her death cert. he is down as Robert Clark Wilson, and my nan wrote it, so, I think he may have used that as an alias, but where I dont know.
His son (my dads biological dad) married a Yorkshire lady in Scotland. This opens more questions as to where they met, so I think that at some point the Wilsons were in Yorkshire and met the Todds.
I am rambling now. I dont think he will ever be found as there isnt enough to go on. I agree that he wouldnt have been the most popular person for deserting, but on his papers he did seem to do it a lot. .

Regards
Anne.
