Thanks for that Russell, very interesting. Maybe that is why the family moved to Lancs then, there are a few Martins there born Scotland, I have yet to link them to mine, but it gives me an idea as to why they moved down to England to find other work. I just wish the census's gave more info on address's, most are just listed as Rigg.

The original census images (on SP) do give more info. If you download a census page from SP, you will then see a link to download the header page. On the header page the enumerator descibed his route in the order he visited the houses, so if for instance you have something like "Main Street, Rigg, Smith Street" then you know that Rigg was between Main Street and Smith Street. However, in rurual areas and small villages it can be less clear sometimes as the names of "streets" can be less precise and sometimes all you can glean is the area or village the cottage was in, without a definiate position, which looks like the case with Rigg.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you for that Lesley, I thought as Ancestry didn't have the originals they weren't available, hopefully i can get an idea from an original of where about they lived.

Hi Claire
Roy again
Just a couple of snippets. From the 1841 and 51 census the family were cotton hand loom weavers and in the 1851 census Robert is shown as a weaver as well.
In one of your posts you asked where I got my info from, I use Scotlands People, FindmyPast, LDS,Freecen,FreeBMD, I have never used Ancestry.
For old places you can view old maps on a site called Oldmaps.UK.
I'll PM you my email adress as I have some scans I can send you if you want.
Another site that might be useful is The Martin Family History Society.
Aw the best and happy huntin'
Roy.

Hi Claire
You should be able to Google it. Sorry I can't give you a link as I'm on the laptop at the caravan and it's on the PC at the house.
Aw the best and happy huntin'

Hi
To find out where places are in Scotland there are a number of useful websites:
Genuki is very useful - here is the page you need www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/DFS/index.html
Google is good for a general placename search www.google.co.uk
and Google maps http://maps.google.co.uk/ is also a great resource to find particular towns etc.
And Wikipedia has its uses:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annan,_Dum ... d_Galloway

Best wishes
Lesley
