And there's 100s more, but not always meaning exactly the same.

On a grammatical basis, I was discombobulated to find out that the "I am going for to do something" is the standard grammatical construction in Swedish, after having the exact same belted out of me at school

Just came across this in Sue Mowats book "The Port of Leith":

Many of the names of parts of ships used in Old Scots, such as "rais" (yards) and "jungfrau" (deadeyes) have their origin in the Low Countries. Indeed the term "timbermen" which we have encountered from the fifteenth century onward, was one of those Low Country loan words. By the start of the eighteenth century it had been replaced by the name "carpenter".

Interesting read. Carn Bhacain somes good. In my limited Gaelic Bhacain would be pronounced "vakin". My understanding of a "gudeman" or goodman would the start of local nobility most probably what was called "bonnet laird" some one who owned a small parcel of land or was a major tenant who sub leased land, similar to a highland tacksman.
