Back again,
Just to add to that Rashiebottom is supposed to be in Keithhall & Kinkell. On the old map it is in that parish but very close to Fintray but possibly partly therein. If we took it further south then it would put it firmly out of Keithhall & Kinkell and into Fintray.
If we search 1851 FreeCen for an address Rashie* in Aberdeenshire there’s also to be found an 8 acre farm called Rashiebodom in Fintray (Jean Robertson) which has neighbouring farms? Blair and Tillikery, also in Fintray. Could this be the farm to the south?

Alan,
The red circle is the exact location of Rashieburn. How does that compare to your trail from 1851?
Regards,
Annette

Hi Alan -wow I have been checking out the aerial photo and your directions- all very easy to follow I must say. That is some detective work!! - the 8 acr farm in Fintray sounds likely to be the one to the south. Re: Keithhall & Kinkell and Fintray-I had noticed previously how close it was to Fintray and found it interesting as George Greig and Mary Milne were married in Fintray(1856). These aerial maps show how close all the family areas really are - interestingly while I was scrolling around the aerial map - just east of Nether Crimond I found an area called Tillygreig. It is just north of the Newmachar area where my g.grandfather George Fraser Greig was born - does anyone know what the word "tilly" refers to in old Scottish? - sounds like the connected families were spread over these surrounding areas for many generations. By the way is there any way of pringing out the old maps or areial photos? - I haven't had any luck so far. Or better still - does anyone know if they can be purchased on line?? thanks for any interesting online journey so far. Sandra

- tilloch, tilly [anglicised gaelic] .... tiolach, s.v. tulach [gaelic]
tulach, tulaich; also tiolach, tealach [gaelic] ... knoll, hillock

Hi Sandra
Yes you can purchase some on line maps.
You may already have clicked on "Map" as well as "Aerial" on Alan's Multimap to see the roads more clearly and then zoomed in or out using the + or -. These maps can be printed (see top right). Apologies if you know this already.
Just had a voice mail from my Rashieburn friend, who has read this online discussion. She says she now knows the exact position of the Rashiebottom in the Census. I am away from my laptop until tomorrow afternoon and will be in contact then when I have spoken to her. It's great that so many of your ancestors are linked to this relatively small area.
Best wishes
Carolyn

hi Carolyn - re the maps - no I didn't know that so thankyou. I must do some experimenting with them - I think I need a PC with large screen to get a better view (and a new pair of glasses - think I'm getting eye strain) How great that your friend knows the exact location of the Rashiebottom from the census - nothing like local knowledge on the ground - how lucky for me that you have a friend in the area. When I first started out and found the reference to Newmachar - I thought that was probably as close as I'd ever get so this is all great stuff. Thanks again - will go and see what I can print out.

Hi Sandra
Just spoken to my Rashieburn friend who has been in touch with a woman now living in Perth (Scotland!) whose grandmother lived in Rashiebotton (Rushybottom) at the beginning of the 20th century. Apparently James Milne and Martha Duguid (not her relatives) are buried in Keithhall Church Graveyard and there is now a haulage business on the Rashiebottom (Rushybottom site)! My friend's elderly neighbours (in their 80s now) can only remember from their childhood a ruin on the site .
If you send me your e-mail address I can send some photos (hopefully including the gravestone) at the end of the month.
Best wishes

Hi Sandra
Just drove past that area yesterday. It seems as though that B&B has gone sadly. Not being a real local I must admit to not knowing the history but live pretty near so if there's anything I can do let me know.
I'll check the certificate in the house but if they are buried in Keithhall churchyard are unlikely to have been Quakers in an earlier existence.
