Hi Linda
- what is Shaw's surname? There is a possibility he may have been named after the surname of a grandmother, or the maiden surname of his mother or somesuch...
Best wishes

Hi Lesley
Thanks for that - I was thinking along those lines too though the IGI is so misleading when you get the same name submitted over and over again. Gillis variations seem to occur fairly evenly all over Scotland ( in the extracts) with other surnames.
Best wishes

How about Nicholas for a female. I have noticed this in the oprs for the are of Kirkcudbright and found a many times removed female cousin who was named Nicholas Clarke. I have also seen Douglas for a female but I thought that was just using a surname for a forename. Never thought of Nicholas as a surname, at least in Scotland.

Christian Names
Hi LesleyB
Thank you for welcoming me to this great site.
My ancestor, Shaw's surname was Cattanach, born in 1811, parents James Cattanach and Margaret Symon. There were several Shaw Cattanachs born in the 18th Century in the Deeside area of Aberdeenshire. The christian name seems to have died out in that area, but I thought if there was a Shaw out there with a different surname I may be able to find a link back. To make it more difficult Shaw was baptized a Catholic so the records are sketchy.
I'll keep hunting.
Best wishes

Hi all,
Just wanted to share these unusual names I found.
I came across a CHESTNUT LOCHARY while searching the IGI. As it was such an unusual name i did a first name search, and she is the only one in the Brittish Isles (also listed under Chestnut Lopprey). Curiosity got the better of me and I had to look around more. Searched North America and there was half a page of them! which got me looking for more unusual/silly names. I tried APPLE, there was half a page, and for some strange reason ACORN. (yes there is some Acorns). Had to put a stop to it there, or I could have got carried away.

On a similar tack,
1805... When news arrived of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar "A Glasgow gentleman" offered a guinea to any three sets of parents who christened their sons "Nelson Trafalgar"..
A quick check on IGI shows that four "Nelson Trafalgar's" were christened in Glasgow during November 1805
s
So some poor wee soul got lumbered with the name...... but missed out on the guinea

After an otherwise unsuccessful day at NRH, rushes home, says a passing hullo to the better half, reluctantly accepts the necessity to feed the cats otherwise I'd be mugged (there's 4 of them!), and, after a brief check of incoming email, - first time for a while it's been 100% spam (12 messages), - then logs on to TS to post the most unusual given name I've ever seen, from an 1870 death register entry, after working out how to find the relevant thread .........
"Ork"
The informant in his grief, the husband of less than 2 years, may well have been misheard by the registrar, as the name on the marriage register is "Ord" - unusual, yes, but believable as a not uncommon surname being used as a given name ...........
Cause of death was "Smallpox after Confinement" .......
Except there were actually two kids, one a bit before the marriage, with both records show the mother's name as "Ork", - I've viewed one but can't find the other for ............
JANET CHALMERS KING
Female
Birth: 21 FEB 1870 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents:
Father: DAVID KING Family
Mother: ORK CLARK
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.
No source document or additional information exists.
This information was generated from another entry that appears in this index. Look for another entry for this person.
Has anyone come across this last comment before ?

Hi David
Never seen that on any extracted entry before.
I wonder if the entry for David Clark King 31 Jan 1872 was extended to cover, and legitimise his sister's birth and was accepted as a late registration by a kindly Registrar.
Would they have backdated a register entry ?
Love the name though. It sounds like a science fantasy name !
