I'm trying to trace my fathers family. His ggg grandparents were James Livingston of Darngararroch (1802-1845) and Janet Kelly (1802-1893). how do i go about finding their parents. All the family come from the Kirkcudbright areas, i don't know where Darngarroch is or if it is spelt correctly. This is the place name i have in a very basic old family tree.
Can anyone help Please??
Thanks
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
A parent search on the online IGI gives the following two children.
JANET LIVINGSTON - Christening: 07 JUN 1831 Girthon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
MARGARET LIVINGSTONE - Christening: 08 FEB 1842 Balmaghie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
On searching the 1890s Ordnance map of that area, Darngarroch is found in Balmaghie parish, beside its boundary with Girthon parish.
Go to http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... _list.html and select Sheet 5 - Kirkcudbright. In the north-west corner, Girthon is the pink-coloured parisg, and Balmaghie is the orange -coloured parish imeediately east of that. To zoom in on Darngarroch click on the south-west corner of Balmaghie parish a few times until the place names become legible.
To see it on a current map, go to current OS map showing Darngarroch] or in close-up close-up current OS map showing Darngarroch].
On looking at some other old maps, the forest there is more recent, and Darngarroch appears to be a hill-farm.
All the best,
AndrewP

Have you looked at Janet's death entry on Scotlands People? This should give her parents names and you can work from there.

Hello Sarah,
Here’s a Death Notice transcription from the Wigtownshire Free Press you may not have.
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~ ... hs/12.html
Could be quite a valuable resource for anyone with interests in that area.
LIVINGSTON, James - D15/10/1845 - On the 15th instant, in the 43d year of his age, after a short and severe illness, James Livingston, farmer, Darngarroch, (Damgarroch) much respected.
Regarding your other post could you please clarify whether you’re looking for NZ info as well or only Scotland.
Alan

Hi Sarah
Just to add to your troubles - Balmaghie is a parish without a focal point.
The church sits surrounded by pasture land and the nearest farm is about a mile away. Each farm and small settlement has a name many of which derive from the gaelic which was spoken in these parts until about the 1700's. Spelling of these names is variable and inconsistent at times, probably because the map makers and officials had problems with the names and many of the locals couldn't spell (or read, or write).
Its a beautiful part of the country though.

Back again Sarah,
I don't know whether you know about these two sites but they contain quite extensive Scottish & NZ info on your family group.

Thanks for everyones help.
Yes i am also looking for the New Zealand side, i do have a little bit of information but most of the dates are missing, this information is from family and from a basic family tree.
I did have the 1851 census records for Janet and her family, what i don't know how to do is find Janet parents, I will look up the death entry as Annette suggested.
James Livingstons parents might be harder to find, I know his mother was Margaret, i think her surname was Bigham or Brigham. But so haven't been able to find a marriage with this name.
Anyway thanks for all the quick replys and the help everyone has offered.

Hi Sarah
When looking for the Bigham ?? name broaden your search slightly to include Dumfriesshire and use wild cards so that the name BINGHAM is covered too.
There were a couple of families down that way by that name.
Use the Scottish naming patterns as a guide to possible parents. Most areas followed it fairly consistently and once you have found siblings the order of naming can help.
There are some problems with records in the Kirkcudbrightshire area as there was a lot of religious dissension and breakaway churches. This meant that records of children's baptisms and marriages might not have been handed on to the Established Church or GRO and do not appear in the current records.
We're just back from St John's Town of Dalry and many of their records for my wife's family are blank from 1750 to the mid 1800's and , of course, her relatives were all too poor to have gravestones
