Research Uncles in Military

Post by Jacobsmom » Tue Sep 04, 2007 2:45 am

I am researching my great uncles that served in WWI in Scotland.

I know at least one was in the Black Watch, stationed in France.
Capt. Martin Taylor
13th Plat. D 9th BW

Pretty sure one was in the Scottish Horse.
maybe Robert Taylor
Also stationed in France.

One served in the H.M.S. but can only make out the first three letters of the ships name,Kan

Any help would be great.

I do have photo postcards. Just don't know who is who.

Thank you, Stephanie
Take care,

Stephanie

Hello Stephanie,

Just on the HMS part of your question.

The link hereunder has a list of Royal Navy ship names. I don't know how comprehensive it is. There's only one ship on it starting HMS Kan...... i.e. HMS Kangaroo, a Destroyer which saw WW1 service. There may be a better list of ships elsewhere.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?tit ... om=Garland

HMS Kangaroo was a B-class torpedo boat destroyer of the British Royal Navy. She was laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company at Jarrow-on-Tyne on 29 December 1899, launched on 8 September 1900 and completed in July 1901. It was sold for scrap to M. Yates on 23 February 1920 but was resold to Thomas W. Ward and broken up at Milford Haven in June 1920.

There's a photo of HMS Kangaroo and one of her crews on this site http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/p ... royers.htm

If Kangaroo doesn't match your name, it might be best to enquire at one of the WW1 forums such as

http://www.1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

Hope this helps,
Alan

Hi Stephanie

The National Archives have medal records for WW1 but although you can search the index on-line you have to pay to see the details. I've found a Robert Taylor who was a private in the Scottish Horse, but I can't find any trace of a Capt. Martin Taylor.

This is the link - hope you have better luck than me.

I haven't been on for a few days and was pleasantly surprised at the replies.
I too, have been on that site. But will try again.
As I am not computer savvy, I do have some photo postcard on a CD. Can you post a photo on this sight?

Thank you again. I'll keep trying. I just want to find faces to match these photos. My Mom is 80 and I want to find them for her.
Take care,

Stephanie

I meant to thank all of you and I will try the sites I haven't been too.
The National Archive has seen me quite alot recently. I know I have older photos of a couple of uncles but not sure who survived the Wars and who didn't...got to get more info from the letters my Mother has tucked away.

Thanks again.
Take care,

Stephanie

Thank you for the info.
I have hopefully loaded an album of my uncles in uniform.

Next question,
can I load more than one album? I have some more pics of one of my uncles on horseback and would love to upload them too.

I am totally computer illiterate as your finding out, but this is exciting for me and I am hoping someone somewhere recognizes just one of these pics and connects me with a distant cousin. I would truly love that.
Take care,

Stephanie
