Hi Marguerite

I think you've overlooked one piece of evidence. The 1855 MC of daughter Mary Ann! From that you'll learn her mum's maiden name and also that Mary Ann has a different birthplace than what is stated on ancestry's 1851 census index....

Name: Timothy Connel
Age: 50
Estimated birth year: abt 1801
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name: Elener
Mother's name: Janet
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Parish Number: 573
Civil parish: Paisley Abbey
Town: Johnstone
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 11 Quarry St
Occupation: Mason's Labourer

Household Members: Name Age
Catherine Connel age 18
Elener Connel age 42
James Connel age 22 born ENGLAND
Mary Ann Connel age 16
Timothy Connel age 50
Janet Craigor age 50

Since Janet Craigor is listed as Timothy's mother above there must be some problem with the transciption of ages! Keeping that in mind.....look at this record from 1861....

Name: Timothy Connell
Age: 70
Estimated birth year: abt 1791
Relationship: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 573/1
Registration district: Paisley High Church
Civil parish: Paisley High Church
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 17 Lady Lane
Occupation: Pensioner (60th Rifles)

Household Members: Name Age
James Connell age 31 son born ENGLAND
Margaret Connell age 31 married to James
Timothy Connell age 70 head

to which leads to the DC for Timothy in 1865 right where you'd expect to find it.

I'm not finding however a DC for Ellen/Helen/Elener. Even though we're led to believe she survived past 1855 she is not on the 1861 census so perhaps her death was prior to the start of statutory registration. You might have luck in finding a burial place for Timothy and finding her nearby.

Best wishes
Jean

Look for Mary Ann's marriage in New Monkland, Lanarkshire in 1855.

You may have some success on hunting down some military records for Timothy...it's certainly worth a try!

Best wishes

I just searched SP for Timothy's death - it's there alright - Timothy Connell 1865. Are you sure you are entering the right info?

Don't enter his age or year of birth.

Hi

I would like to share this with Just Jean as she helped me find Timothy Connel my GGGgrandfather who came from Ireland to Johnstone .Renfrewshire. I found out some info about him and his family on Find my past.com.I couldnt figure out how his son James was born England 1828 his daughter catherine Ireland 1833 and Mary Anne ireland 1835.I found out from millitary records that he must have been in the army for a while and this is why his children were born in different countries.Even found that Catherine was born Templemore Ireland and Mary Anne Kilrush, James was born Portsmouth.Still wondering why he came to Scotland must have been the potatoe famine.I knew my GGgran Catherine Connell was born ireland from the 1851 cencus for Johnstone but now i know exactly where she was born i am even more excited. Thanks Marguerite

Maybe he was posted to Scotland & thought it was a good bet to stay or he didn't have the means or inclination to return to Ireland.
I have rellies coming from Donegal at about the same period to Abbey Parish which is not a million miles away.

Actually just thinking about it GGGreat-Grandpa's 2nd wife was Margaret ConnellY I wonder if there is any connection?

Hi there

We have relatives who arrived in Johnstone from Ireland about the same time.
Wherever you find a small community of Irish immigrants a few years later it has grown as more folk moved for work. Ireland was still largely agricultural at that time and poor harvest and growing families forced some people to move away. The Johnstone area probably looked a good place as there was hand loom weaving going on in all the surrounding villages. Unfortunately the domestic weaving line was beginning to be superceded by weaving shops on a commercial scale so even the local weaving people were having problems earning enough to live.
Johnstone was a developing manufacturing place with coal and ironstone nearby so that there were casting shops and machine tool premises. Ideal places for labouring jobs of various sorts which did not require particular skills so many of the Irish men turned to ironstone or coal mining. Dangerous work but it earned a wage. Later many moved into the outskirts of Paisley to find work in the weaving and thread mills.(Abbey covered Johnstone and Elderslie amongst other places).
