Robert Brodie and Agnes Brodie married 28 Feb 1880 Bathgate
I am seeking some details on this couple specifically for Robert. Can anyone help me with his whereabouts in 1861? He was born in 1855 in Bathgate and I need to know which Brodies were his parents. TIA

Hi Susan,
His parents (including his mother's maiden surname) should be listed on the marriage certificate - which should be available from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (for a small fee).
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Susan
Andrew has pointed you to the best resource, and only source of the original certificates.
Scottish certificates are more detailed but this one is a gold medal winner.
In 1855 so much detail was asked for that it spread across two pages so you should have the date of parents marriage, and where and perhaps information about siblings (unless he was their first child).
Prior to 1855 there was no Legal requirement to register births so the Old Parochial Records (OPR) are possible sources of earlier life events but the quality of these records is very variable from parish to parish and over time too, so it can be pot luck what information can be gleaned from them.
This also presupposes that parents were members of the Established Church of Scotland whose records are available on-line, or belonged to some other church, of which there were many, whose records were either destroyed, not maintained, or never handed over to be archived.
Happy searching

Like Andrew said the marriage entry should give the parents names.
According to the 1881 census he was born in Bathgate about 1856.
Agnes seems to be a bt easier to find -
Is this her?
AGNES BRODIE
Female
Event(s):
Birth: 21 MAY 1860 Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JAMES BRODIE Family
Mother: SUSAN KNOX
A look at FREECEN shows are a couple of James Brodies living in Bathgate in 1841. Both have a Robert in the household.
Kind regards,
Annette M

Thanks to you all for your help. I have no problem with Agnes as she is my direct line. I also have them in 1881 and 1891. I was just too stingy to pay for the certificates
and hoped someone was descended from Robert's parents. I will get round to visiting Scotland's People. We, in Cornwall, can access all censuses for free

The IGI includes an Index to Scottish civil births 1855 to 1875 but I can't see a Robert Bodie born anywhere in West Lothian in 1855. The only one that appears for 1855 is Robert Crawford Brodie 22 Aug 1855 Middle or New Parish, Greenock Renfrew - parents Crawford Brodie and Agnes Drummond

I cannot easily find this Robert nor any other suitable one in 1861

An IGI batch search for all children named Robert and registered in Bathgate gives 19 results - none of them Brodie, or anything that looks similar enough to be a mistranscription.
Could he have been born illegitimate and registered under his mother's surname. If so, there may be a clue to that on the marriage certificate.
Best regards,
AndrewP

Robert and Agnes Brodie of Bathgate
Thanks Trish1 andAndrew P. I had already tried the IGI and found the same as you but thank you for looking anyway. I will try for the marriage certificate on Scotland's people. The only reason I have for a birthplace of Bathgate is the census information and I know from experience that that can be way out.
