42nd Royal Highland Regiment of Foot

Hi
We have a Christopher Walker age 20 who in 1881 is in Aldershot, England as a Private in 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of Foot.
By 1887 he had left the Army and in the Glasgow Police Force.

I am trying to work out what he might be doing during this period, was he a new recruit and training at Aldershot or was the 42nd at that time based there?

Also a relative has heard a story that during this period his regiment was involved in some way with Gordon in Kartoum?

Does any one know where and what the 42nd was involved in between 1881 and 1887?
