wdytya : Jane Price and other nonsense
Well I did enjoy some of the themes thsi week, but I was scunnered by the genealogy . I have no idea how they proved that all the Daniel Price's were the same fellow, and as I am certain that Garstang and Garston are 2 completely different places , this plus the dsicrepancy in the age of Jane Price in 1891 and 1901 leaves me wondering how they proved that these two Jane Prices are one and the same.
As a genealogical series this is total drivel.
But I still like it !

Hi Sally
Like me you watch it to see the expressions on faces when they discover their long held family 'history' is a load of cobblers.
At least they did try to show some genuine searching of archives and give a flavour of how much stuff you have to trawl through even when you know exact dates.
There was no attempt to place the social history in context either which irritated me enormously. Things like railway accidents. - Of course there were more accidents when there were fifty times more trains trundling about on many more miles of track which our never lamented Dr Beeching shut down. Railways were the transport system of the day and we should compare the number of road accidents and fatalities. Probably as many in a week as they had in a year
But I still like it

Hi Sally and everyone
When they had Griff spending time researching railway accidents, I was yelling at the tv - Look at the death certificates
They were presumably trying to make the point that you have to verify everything before you can believe it. Follows on the theme from last week's programme with John Hurt.
I noticed that when they showed Griff searching for Daniel Price's death on screen, they very carefully only showed the names and no other information.
They obviously chose to get death certificates for the others to add a bit of spice to the programme due to the causes of death, as at least 2 of them could be discarded straight away due to age. Surely there must have been loads of Daniel Price's.
k
Of course the programme makers will choose ancestors who have an interesting life story, whether good or bad - otherwise their programme would be boring.
Best wishes
Claudette

About your last post. My wife works for Boots and she was telling me that they filmed Griff looking at archives at their head office. She told me that his father or grandfather worked for Boots as a Terrority Manager that is an Area Manager now. So looks like they showed the more interesting branch of his family.

I was incensed when he called his Great-Grandmother less than capable & that the children ended up in an Industrial School because she couldn't get them to school.
Um maybe they didn't have shoes to attend school-I have heard tell of children being denied admission because they were not properly shod. They may also have been earning a few bob to help Mum out-no pension(would the railways have provided one?) & no Social Security.
The fact that she kept them all out of the Poorhouse speaks to me of someone with determination.
I also wondered as the eldest went to USA if he & the others had been "Home Children".I am sure there must be more info on their situation.
They didn't even check the Ellis Island site to see if she had gone to USA to follow William or if she had remarried.Maybe the adoptive Mother was Sarah Price! I am sure they could have found her Death if they had looked properly.
If they want to rectify their omissions I am perfectly happy to jolly off to NY to visit Ellis Island & do the searching in person.
I did enjoy the mining section & what insight it gave to the terrible conditions the people worked under particularly as I have rellies Iron-Stone mining at the same time in Scotland.
I did shed a tear when he read the death certificates as he realised the family lore was just that.
Spent a lot of time shouting at TV but better than last weeks offering.

I felt the same Joette. The children probably had to go and earn a crust rather than go to school. They glossed over how the eldest got to USA and I found it hard to believe they couldn't get a death certificate for the mother but I did enjoy it.

Yep i thought that as so many people from these shores have gone to USA &Canada they might have delved into that area.
I would have been really interested in that & as I say am avaiable for any jolly to New York & search Ellis Island in person! Especially as my sister & niece gave it top marks-best city they have ever visited.

Yes I thought the whole Daniel Price thing was quite odd as well. Not only was there no name on the death cert for his wife, but in the newspaper stories she was constantly referred to as Mrs Price! So how did he know it was her?!
They obviously did know, I'm guessing the kid's school records or the trial papers had more info, but the other reference that threw me was when Griff stated Daniel had just come from his brother-in-law's pub before getting into his scrap - hold the phone, where did that come from?!!! I'm guessing that many other sequences were cut that contained this info and more, which is fine, but it's just a wee bit scrappy in the scripting department not to bridge the gap that the missing bit probably provided.
Apart from that though, it was a great programme. I though the bit where he summed up Daniel's story at the end was both funny and tragic at the same time. But again, what became of Mrs Price? That's the bit that narks me most, when they leave loose ends like that!
But much, much better than last week's!
Chris

I see there is a wee bit extra footage about that on the BBC website. There's a good quote of advice the gf gave in one of the Company's magazinesdjcrtoye wrote:About your last post.
