U P Road Kilsyth

Post by AnnieMack » Sat Sep 29, 2007 10:04 pm

Does anyone know what the U P stands for? I have an ancestor born in U P Close which seems to have disappeared but U P Road still exists to this day.

I am curious as to what it means,

Hi Annie,

I too have people in U P Close, Kilsyth in the censuses (family name Whigham). The 1998 Royal Mail postcode directory that I have lists Up Lane and Up Road, Kilsyth (up as in opposite of down).

I had expected it to stand for something. It may have done originally, but that has been lost through the years, or at least lost to the Royal Mail. On the web, you can find it listed as U.P. or Up on different websites.

[a few minutes later] On checking the header pages on the 1871 census for that enumeration district, it lists U.P. Close. I still favour that it should be United Presbyterian Close, but can find no evidence for that. That same enumeration book header page makes reference to the Free Church Manse. Had that church been United Presbyterian at some stage?

All the best,

AndrewP

My Cooks stayed at Up Close in 1881 (neighbours of your lot Andrew.)

I think you're right with your idea Andrew. One of their neighbours is the Minister.
