A WW2 Death after VE Day?

Hi All,
I was going through some family papers relating to a relative's trip to Scotland in 1980. A tiny note in a margin, "Jimmy died on VE Day." caught my attention. I believed Jimmy to be James Bird Cranston, the youngest son of my great aunt, Anne. I checked at SNWM & found his service number: 264221 & his rank: Lt., Royal Scots. With that, I went to GWGC & found his record. (Here he is listed as a Captain.) At both sites, his date of death is given as 22/05/1945.
My question comes in 2 parts. Any suggestions on how would I might find out exactly where & how he died? Or are such WW2 records not accessible? Secondly, from this side of the Atlantic, any ideas on how gaining access to photos, either of his grave or of his name on a war memorial in Haddington? The grave is located: Sec. A. Grave 161. Cemetery: Haddington (St. Martin’s) New Burial.

I dont know if this thread is still open, but I have a photo of James Cranstons grave in Haddington if it is still required.
