Hi,

I'm trying to fnd out more info on a George Keppie Paterson who was a medical practicioner in Edinburgh. George died in 1942 aged 81. I don't know for sure if did his medical studies at Edin. Univ.
Is there an organization that would know?

Hi Dennis,

You should look up the annual Medical Registers and/or Medical Directories at your nearest main library to see if they have a listing for him. My five greats uncle, Dr William Henderson, was a physician who died in Perth in 1870, and when I checked the Mitchell Library for the registers a couple of years back, I found that the earliest held there was for 1865. The following is the entry, to give you an idea of the info it can contain, including graduation details, home address, publications, and more:

HENDERSON, WILLIAM, 17 Rose Terr. Perth - M.D. St And 1810; L.M. Edin 1809; (Edin) Author of "Rep Cases of Small-pox, being first Appear. of Disease, epidem., after Discov. of Vaccin., with Remarks &c." 1819; "Brief Facts as to Effects of Intemper. om Phys. and Intellect. Powers of Man" 1830; "Plain Rules for Improv. Health, &c." 2nd edit 1865; Contrib. "Case of Caesar. Sect. where Child was saved, " Edin. Med. Journ. 1821; "Case of Amaurosis," Ibid. 1822; "History of Case of Spontaneous Rupture of Bowels, where Life was protracted under extraord. circumstances" Ibid. 1823; "New and Successful Method of treating Dis. of Prostate Gland, " Lancet 1841; "Treatm. of Intus-susception" Ibid. 1845.

It was a visit to the Mitchell I'm afraid! But any of the big libraries should have them.

I was "amused" where it stated & it's even worthy of a paper being published "Case of Caeser.Sect.where the child was saved"-1821.
Even in such a short space of time how things have changed.It would be more noteworthy today if a child being delivered by this method was not saved.

I wonder how the "too posh to push" brigade would have faired then?

It's actually more extraordinary than that! The mother was in labour for well over 100 hours and was severely disabled, hence the caesarean. She tragically died in the procedure, but the baby girl survived and was christened Caesar Anna...! It was only the third ever successful caesarean operation performed in Scotland, so was quite a big deal at the time. I've actually still to chase up the article in the Edinburgh Medical Journal over it!

Last week on R4 the book of the week:
Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters

Letters written by the author to his mother Mary Doyle.

Featured on one day the story of carrying out a surgical procedure to correct a hernia. Reference was made to it being a rare and dangerous procedure, bearing in mind that this was done by CD who was a GP and I don't think it was in a hospital either.
