Where is Castle St. & Castle Sq. Stonehaven
I am trying to find 3 Smith's Court, Castle Street, Stonehaven (where my dad was born in 1889). And 7 Castle Square, Stonehaven where he lived in 1915 when he left to join the Canadian Army. His parents lived there until at least 1921(where my grandfather died). I have tried all links I could find to try and pin point these location, but no luck. Can someone tell me how to find these streets, if they still exist. I'm trying to get a location and possibly a picture of these locations. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Hi Marva
A search on www.streetmap.co.uk seems to suggest that both Castle Street and Castle Square are down by the old pier.
map here
Castle Street can also be seen here, in 1864 (choose the area that says harbour, bottom left, Castle Street is south-east of the gasworks )
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/stonehaven.html
I think you would need a more detailed map, or someone with local knowledge to find Smith's Court, if it still exists.
Searches on Google suggest that Castle Square still exists, but I suspect Smiths Court may not.... but I may be wrong!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Marva
As Lesley suggests it might require detailed local knowledge to pinpoint the Square.
On the 1856 map down by the harbour is a maze of narrow streets and squares but none of them are named unfortunately.
I don't know whether we have anyone from Stonehaven direction amongst the members.
A detailed modern Ordinance Survey map should give an exact location.

Hi Marva,
I wondered if you'd seen this http://www.geocities.com/thistleinn/jamesleiper.html
and this http://www.geocities.com/thistleinn/jameshelen.html
This is the main page http://www.geocities.com/thistleinn/index.html
Jim Allan is very knowledgeable about Stonehaven and might be able to help you more.

Thanks everyone,
I will try Jim Allan. I have had help from him in the past, but have been away for awhile and trying to get back on track. I have found Castle Street, which is close to Shorehead (where 2 other brothers were born), but I cannot find Castle Square or 3 Smith's Square. From all I've found the family lived very close for many generations. My father was the first to leave Scotland.
I have found a second cousin in England and her mother, living in another country through the inter net and she is going to try and find the streets for me when she takes a trip back to Stonehaven. I am trying to see if I can help her, so she can help me.

A search at www.royalmail.co.uk finds 7 Castle Square pretty much where everyone suggested.

Hi Marva,
If you go to www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk and click Local Information, then Interactive Map, with a bit of navigation and enlargement you'll see Castle Street and Castle Square. No sign of Smith's Square though.
Another site for you to explore: http://www.geograph.org.uk for many photographs of Stonehaven. Although I don't think there are any showing either of the above addresses there are quite a number showing the harbour area which your ancestor would have known.
Regards,
Bervonian.

You could contact Stonehaven Heritage Society as they have old photos of Stonehaven. There are photos of Castle street on www.rcahms.gov.uk . Search for Stonehaven and restrict the search to items with images online.

Thanks to all who helped me . I have found Castle Street and Castle Square. Also found Shorehead and High street where family also lived. They all all within a short distance. I contacted Jim Allan and he told me Castle Square is within Castle Street. He will try and find where Smith's Court is. Again, thanks a million.

A planning application for No. 5 Castle Square.

I'm pretty sure that all the houses there are council houses built around the 70s. My sister in law used to live in one of them. I'll try and get down there next week for a look.
