Last seen 1901 Census-William Fraser

Post by Annieboag2 » Mon Oct 22, 2007 9:20 am

Hi, can anyone help with ideas where to look next............

William Fraser born 1865 Perth, Child Of James Fraser(Colinton) and Marjory McNaughton(Perth)
last sighting :) 1901 census, as a lodger at 19 Church St , Huntly Aberdeenshire, assistant ec minister.
We have spent a lot of money on trawling death certificates, can't find but as you can imagine hundreds to search, and he could have gone off anywhere......no marriage in Aberdeenshire(Was already 36 in 1901)

Are their records of Episcopalian ministers ?(If he was promoted!!!)Have looked in directories in Ancestry....no luck

Grateful for any pearls of wisdom...
Annie :)

Hi Annie
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D
Are their records of Episcopalian ministers ?
Yes, see:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10328
BERTIE, David M, "Scottish Episcopal Clergy 1689-2000" (Edinburgh: T & T Clark, 2000)
A reference book of clergy who have served the Scottish Episcopal Church between 1689 and 2000. Includes biographical notes, details of the theological colleges, and information on the Church's history.
can be found at NAS and other decent sized ( :D ) reference libraries.
Certainly worth a look as from what you have said, your man should be in it. He might have left Scotland to do missionary work - it was pretty popular around the turn of the century.

Not sure where you are situated, but I may be in a position later this week to be passing a decent sized reference library, so can perhaps have a look if you are not able to do so or no one else beats me to it!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello again Lesley,
the tips were great but unfortunately no joy....one very promising lead in St Stephens , Inverness, but I found his biography later and he had different parents. I believe the volumes published in your link are for The Church of Scotland............If he did become a minister he would have been Episcopalian....I think, and I mean no offence to anyone if I am wrong ,that that is a different church....... :?

I live in Salisbury, not sure if there is a good reference library near here. Will have to send my Mother-in-law to Edinburgh armed with a list of where to try(it is her ancestor after all :)
Thanks again
Annie

Hi Annie
The majority of links are for plain old CoS - the Bertie book is mentioned on the same page which was my reason for pointing you in that direction. (written too many essays lately - I'm on automatic "reference mode" !!)

As far as I'm aware there are no online sources for Episcoplain Churches - and you are quite correct, it is a different church!

I checked today in BERTIE, David M, "Scottish Episcopal Clergy 1689-2000" (Edinburgh: T & T Clark, 2000) ... sorry to report there is no William Fraser or Frazer mentioned, so perhaps he was not "promoted" or did not stay with the church as a career.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
sorry not to have replied sooner - too much competition for the computer in our house! Thank you so much for looking him up for me....we shall just have to leave him for a bit.
Thanks again, you are very kind.
Annie
