birth certificate

Post by dollyann » Mon Oct 22, 2007 10:49 pm

Hi all
this is my first time here so you will have to be patient with me my problem is I'm trying to find my fathers birth certificate. He was born in Glasgow (gorbals) 28 Dec 1921 but I don't know much about his family I know he came to England to look for his brother after the war His brother left Glasgow after a family row my dad heard he was in Liverpool .Dad stopped off in Manchester where he met my mother and never went any further hope I'm making sense .He never said much about his family I know he had at lease 3 brothers and 2 sisters the story is his mother died when he was very young and his father married again so that caused trouble in the family. He died in July 1985 and I still miss him very much would love to be able to get a copy of his birth and find my grandparents names and then go on from there I'm sorry if Iv gone on a bit I also joined scotlandspeople but the records only go to 1901
Thank you for taking time to read this x

Hi Dollyann

Welcome to Talking Scot. [talkingscot] You will find many friendly people here who will help you.

Could you give us the names of your father and mother. ScotlandsPeople only gives births to 1906. Marriages and Deaths are given for later dates. I believe that you could get your own parents birth certificates from GROS.

If you have your father's Death Cert., you should be able to get his parents names.

Hope that this helps.

Regards
Sheila

Hi Dollyann

It is too bad that his parents names weren't on his Death Cert.

I believe that if you write to GROS, with the facts ,they will send you your Father's Birth Certificate. I am sure that his parent's names will be on the Birth Certificate. They might also send you his marriage Certificate.
I think that you have an excellent chance of finding out your grandparents' names. :)

There may be easier ways to obtain these certificates that some other people here will know about.

Regards

P.S. You might find out even more things from his army records.

Hi Dolly
Welcome to Talking Scot. :D

With the info you have you could apply directly to GROS for a copy of your father's birth entry. See:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html
and
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... flet2.html

The same may not apply to your mother if she was born in England. If your father died in England you will not have the parent details on the death cert. but the Scottish birth entry should give you the info you are looking for.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley
Thank you also for you help. Iv looked at you links and the part that says ( If a common surname, further details such as parent’s names are required.) I think Brown is a common name and I don't know my grandparents name but Ill try and see what happens I don't know how to get into the records so I will probably have to write thanks again

Quick look produced this. Hope it gets you started and that it is the right one.

Joseph Brown. Born 28/12/1921 (registered in 1922) in Hutcheson, Glasgow

Son of Fyfe Brown and Agnes Brown (ms. Riley) who were married on 30/12/1910.

Searched the obvious and, yes, he had a brother called Fyfe born 15/02/1915

The father, Fyfe Brown, was born in December 1889 in Gorbals, Glasgow. He is registered as 'Wylie or Brown' as his father Robert died before he was born. His Mother was Helen Wylie and she later remarried to become 'McKenzie'
