Just got FTM 2008

Post by csa » Tue Oct 23, 2007 6:13 pm

Hi

I have just received FTM 2008 (Ancestry's latest version of Family Tree Maker) . I had previously been using FTM 2005. It seemed a good deal with 6 months free access to Ancestry databases.

Having successfully transferred all the data to 2008, the first problem I encountered was within the "Places Workspace"where 2008 has listed all occupations as well as places. I also had to contact Ancestry technical support to get access to Microsoft Virtual Earth (one of the new additions)

I am gradually getting used to a very different format which certainly makes searching Ancestry databases much easier.

Has anyone else got any thoughts on "2008"

Best wishes

Hi CSA,

I put the 2008 version on my computer a few weeks ago.

There were a few things I didn't like about the new program

1. The main page was a little too busy, too much information all together.

2. I don't like the way the media is stored. I much preferred the "scrapbook" in the 2006 version.

3. I really didn't like the idea that you couldn't print off "genealogy reports" like I could in the 2006 version.

On the plus side I like the look of some of the reports that the program generates.

We have a lady at our genealogy club who gives lessons once a month on the Family Tree Maker program. Yesterday, I got good news from her. Apparently there were enough complaints about not being able to print genealogy reports, that it is now available as an add on. So that makes me happy.

Also discovered while playing around with the program, that I could move the list on the left side of the screen, off the screen, so that makes the page a little less crowded.

I'm sure it will just take some time to get used to the new format. Just wish they'd do something about the media area.....but them maybe I'm just never satisfied

Regards,

Ina

Ina

Good to hear your comments. I agree the main page is too busy.
Glad to hear it is possible to get report printing as an add on. Do you know where I can get it?

I fedback to Ancestry technical support that I was disappointed that I couldn't get "All in One" reports (as in 2005 version). It seems that others have raised this and Ancestry will be looking in to it.

Overall it has some very impressive additions and it seems Ancestry are listening and responding to comments.

Thanks again Ina.

Best wishes

Hi Carolyn,

I wrote to FTM a few weeks ago and complained about the 2008 version not being able to produce genealogy reports. I just received the following answer.

Dear Ina,

We appreciate your message.

Yes Genealogy reports as well as other chart options will be added to Family Tree Maker 2008 with our next patch which you should expect to see in the next couple weeks.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

So the good news is they listen to us. Looking forward to receiving the "patch".
