Would someone familiar with Glasgow area history be willing to help me with the following?

While researching my ancestors, I recently found a 1725 Barony OPR birth entry that noted "August 1 - John Black and Jonet Thompson in Craigendmuire had a child bapt called James." An entry for another family on the same page also references Craigendmuire.

Would this most likely refer to the Craigendmuir near Stepps? I'm not familiar enough with the time period to know if it would be reasonable to think that a family from that area would register a birth in Barony.

Hi Laura

I can't give you a definitive answer because my map site refuses to open up for me tonight, but, there is some useful information on the Genuki site about the parish with additional links which may help.

The old Barony parish was huge spreading right across the whole of what is now Glasgow city. Many of the current place names did not exist back then as the communities were developed around coal and ironstone mines they served so it can be difficult to pinpoint exact boundaries.

Google in 'Barony parish, Lanarkshire' and there are quite a few interesting results come up.

Hi Laura,

According to the 1890s Ordnance Survey maps, Craigendmuir was in Barony Parish. Stepps was across the parish boundary in Cadder Parish.

Select sheet 31 - Airdrie
Barony is the green coloured parish close to the south-west corner of the map. Cadder is the blue colored parish immediately above Barony. Click on the boundary of these two parishes just east of the centre of that boundary until you can read the place names. You should see Craigendmuir and Stepps (spelled as Steps).
