The Irish in Scotland

Hi,
I've finally traced some of my ancestors back to Ireland and became interested in how they came to be in Dumfries-shire.

I have found reference to a book called "The Irish In Scotland 1789 - 1845" by J E Handley (Cork 1943) and would very much like to get hold of it.

However despite finding numerous references to it (and many other books he wrote) through Google, I haven't managed to find where I might get hold of a copy.

Has anyone any ideas?

It is no longer in print, but Cork University Press lists this dealer who has a mixed stock of about 6,000 books of Irish and non-Irish interest.

I had tried searching the Inverness Library Catalogue but nothing came up. Will have to have words with them!

Hi everyone,

I just did some quick searches for Lizzie's book and didn't find it. However, I did just check eBay US and found a ton of stuff. Someone who is familiar with Irish genealogy books should go there and search Irish Roots Bookstore. Looks like they have some very interesting books, but I'm not familiar with these at all.

Whether you shop here or not, I have found eBay to be a ready source of information for titles, dates, publishers etc.

If you are able to access the book but cannot purchase it you could note down his list of sources as some of those may be available on Google Books or elsewhere.

Hi Lizzie,

I've checked the COPAC website (http://www.copac.ac.uk/) and there are additonal copies held in at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and a copy at the National Library of Scotland - so you could also try for an interlibrary loan.

Thanks for all the info. Tried Inverness Library today but unfortunately they seem to have mislaid their copy!

Just a thought but would any of the Family History Societies have a copy of the book?

Only suggesting it because when I went to the Family History Society in Haddington in October it turned out that they had a number of very useful books which I had thought I would never get to see and certainly would not have been able to afford to buy.

Worth a try?
