Hi Lesley,

Welcome to TalkingScot. [scotland-flag]

There is one on ScotlandsPeople that should be your Margaret Gibson/McNaught. To keep you challenged, she is not spelled as McNaught. Do a search for Margaret Gibson, other surname M*c*n*t and you will get only two results. Only one of them is reasonable to go for - the other is too recent.

Even allowing for the same spelling variations as above, I see no sign of a death record for Elizabeth McNaught/Kennedy. My feeling is that she probably died between the 1851 census and the start of statutory registration in Scotland in 1855.

The 1861 census reveals some more children (all born in Glasgow) for you to seek.
  • William McNight 34
    Margaret McNight 37
    John S McNight 10
    William L McNight 8
    Robert G McNight 6
    Mary O McNight 3
    Catherine R McNight 1
Catherine's birth is on ScotlandsPeople as McNight, as is her death at age 90.

See also the birth of Jane K McNight in 1862, born Inverkip, registered there, and registration transcribed in the "home" district of Anderston. She lived to age 86, death registered as McKnght. So it looks like you will need to keep searching ScotlandsPeople using the wildcarded surname M*c*n*t to track this lot down.

No sign of them so far in 1871 or 1881 censuses. Who knows which spelling(s) they have gone by on these occasions.

All the best,

AndrewP

Post by kenspeckle » Sun Dec 09, 2007 4:54 am

Thank you very much Andrew it does look as if this is the one.... strange the name changing to MCKNIGHT ? the only real clue that could nail it is the mothers maiden name being ORR

could not find him in census I will try again using a different tack
The Coachman job is interesting as ELIZABETH MCNAUGHT the daughter of ROBERT MCNAUGHT this WILLIAMS brother her father in law SAMUEL GUNNING had a Coach Hire Business and her hubby was a coachman before he became an engineer
I had a look at 1881 census and she is there with family widowed so she was widowed prior to 1881 but no person on scotlands people only one of that mcknight name and he was married to a sarah nicholson grrrr
and the 2 mcnaughts are too late

any ideas please

McNaught MCKnight ect

Post by kenspeckle » Sun Dec 09, 2007 5:49 am

I got the record on SP 1871 but the parents names are wrong
parents are John McKnight coachman and Jane McKnight nee Scott

So back to the drawing board it means he is not my William McNaught he may even have died young after 1841 census ??

the only other possible is below but his death is not on SP under ANY spelling and she is widowed in 1881 so he must have died between 1871 & 1881
hope this may help someone else looking for the Mc Naughties

Hi Lesley,

Your William McNight's death is there. You know he was alive in 1862 when Jane's birth was registered and that he was dead by 1884 when Margaret was reported as a widow on her death certificate. So doing a search on that basis and making an assumption to narrow down the list of results, produces 3 results. One is in the district where most of their events were registered.

The search I made was for William M*c*N*t, died between 1862 and 1884 in Glasgow City (assumption), having been born in 1827 ± 5 years.

This death is about 4 weeks after the census, so he should be on the 1871 census, and most pobably in that same district.

(15 minutes later)
Here they are in 1871 by yet another spelling.
  • William McRight 44
    Margaret McRight 46
    John S McRight 20
    William L McRight 18
    Robert G McRight 16
    Mary O McRight 13
    Catherine R McRight 11
    Jane C McRight 8
(after a further search)
Here they are in 1881.
  • Margarate McKnight 57
    John McKnight 30
    William McKnight 28
    Robert McKnight 26
    Catherine McKnight 21
    Jane McKnight 18
I was searching for Margaret - no wonder I didn't find them earlier.

All the best,

AndrewP

MC NAUGHT Glasgow

Post by kenspeckle » Sun Dec 09, 2007 1:03 pm

Hi Andrew thank you so very much for your help on my MCNAUGHTS 's I was trying to find a link to some other folk that had also Mc Naughts by going down the lines of the siblings the girls being a nightmare so I did not go there and as I had Robert & James all sorted I was trying to find William thinking he may be the link ... and thought by going through the census it had to be either the one married to Margaret Gibson or the one married to Flora Shaw as they were the only ones with approx birth year 1829 Lanark that I could find
the William Mc Knight married to Margaret Gibson I got his death May 1871 but his parents are John Mc Knight and Jane Scott GRRRR ! & I need it to be John Mc Naught & Elizabeth Kennedy so he is definitly out of the picture
and the other one who was married to Flora Shaw he is in 1871 census but I cant find his death and she Flora is a widow in 1881 census
I tried william M*C*N*T between 1871 & 1881 Glasgow City and got
1 1876 MCKNIGHT WILLIAM M 45 HUTCHESONTOWN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/11 0397 VIEW (PAID) ORDER
2 1871 MCNIGHT WILLIAM M 44 ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/08 0576 VIEW (PAID) ORDER
neither married to Flora Shaw
I tried just plain M*C*N*T City: GLASGOW CITY; District: HIGH CHURCH;
but no Williams
I tried William Mc Naught 1871 -1881 birth year 1830 +- 5 yrs anywhere in Scotland (Getting desperate ) and got a William 1877 age 43 in Camlachie the age is wrong .....but I had a look anyhow (nosiness is second nature to me )and its him The hubby of Flora Shaw but his dad is William Mcnaught a Dyer and mother is Catherine Strang

SOOOOOOO I reckon my William Mc Naught must have karked it when he was young
I really appreciate your help and time and hope I can reciprocate
best regards Lesley in Tassie where its supposed to be the middle of summer and its 8 degrees !

PS if anyone wants any of the info I got on the Mc Naughts I will send to them
