Hi Ellen,
Happy Christmas and New Year to you, too! Sounds like you have a lovely trip planned! :D

Does the birth certificate not give the number of the street where he was born, or do you not yet have the cert? Being too recent to be online, you'd have to look it up at New Register House in Edinburgh, if you don't already have it.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Ellen,
Looking at the map, I see that at least it is a short street...! But as for knowing exactly which number, unless someone more familiar with the area has a brilliant idea, the only think I can think of is to get birth certificates for his siblings, or a marriage certificate if it was close to the same time and hope that they were living in the same place and that the number would be given on one of them. Another thing to try would be the city directory for that year, if such exists. They may well have it at the Mitchell. Look up the father's name on Ann Street and it should tell you. That would be easiest and most fool-proof, if the directories are available.
Good luck!
Sarah

Hi Ellen,
Googling around, I would think that your best bet for directories would be the Watt Library in Greenock. They have a number of genealogically related holdings including an online index of births marriages and deaths mentioned in the newspaper. Unfortunately, that only goes up to about 1913, but if your family was in Greenock earlier, it could be very useful.

Go to :
http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/GeneralLnc ... catid=1015

and have a look. I would either call or email a librarian first, to make sure they have what you want, but it looks hopeful.

All the best,
Sarah

hi Ellen
in May am going to meet my dad's cousin also hoping to go to the Mitchell libery i will be visting Ann Street Greenock,
You might be as well to add Park Circus to your list of places to visit (if planning to go, book ahead, they can be very busy), then you can look up all the more recent events for yourself, seeing the originals. These cannot be printed out (if the are after the cut-off dates for SP) so take a pencil and notebook with you!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Ellen,

If you contact the Watt Library, the Voters' Roll and Valuation Rolls may be places to seek an exact address.

All the best,
