New Year - New Eyes. Old Topic.

Post by Cathy » Wed Jan 02, 2008 9:18 pm

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Seeking once again Peter McLeod b.c. 1868.
Latest family snippet says he came from Inverness to Glasgow, and he spoke Gaelic.
He was by trade a Carter.
On the death cert. of his daughter Christina 1901, it says he is a Private, Scottish Rifles. This is the only cert. that mentions Scottish Rifles. Distant rellie is waiting for a reply from this organisation.
He had seven illegitimate children with Helen McKenna before they married. Three died before the age of two and one died in childbirth at age twenty.

I have his M.C. 1930 and D.C. 1931.
Both state his parents as Peter McLeod, Carter and Mary Ferguson.

POSSIBLE 1901 census:
Burns Lodging House, 14-16 Watson St., Glasgow. 644/05 051/05 002
Peter McLeod, Lodger, Single, 30, Labourer, b. Stornaway. Gaelic-No.

There are others on the page from the Islands, and all have No to Gaelic,
so I'm thinking the enumerator couldn't be bothered checking properly.

Any new ideas for finding a birth or census entry?

Cathy,

What I am finding is that it's all to do with how things are spelt (?) in the first place. Could it be Macleod? Do you know what District in Inverness Peter may have come from?

Only SP is showing better Inverness results around that time for Macleod than it is for Mcleod...

I'll keep digging - I'm stuck on my tree at the moment...

Regards - and Happy New Year to you all...

Andy
Searching at the moment on Seth (Seath), Dods (Dodds) at that will do for starters...

Hi Cathy

Have you checked all the possible births on the IGI - there are 28 from 1866-1870 - the IGI has the advantage of giving most of the spelling variations in one query.

There are a few in Glasgow & two in Duirinish, Inverness 1867 & 1870. Parent names are given on the IGI which may help

I don't see any with parents Peter and Mary :( :(

Trish

There is a 1 year old Peter McLeod listed in 1871 as "wife's son sister" not sure what this means - head is a Donald McPherson aged 40 - wife Margaret 36 - Inverness - Peter is listed born Forres, Elgin

Hi Andy,
I always use wildcards with any Mc/Mac names. I can't pin him down in any particular place. I have posted on this person before, but didn't have the latest snippets.

Hi Trish,
I have checked the IGI, but like you say, no matching parents.
I'll check out the 1871, its probably wife's sister's son.

Thanks for replies.
Cathy
