Hi
I am trying to find out any information about John Paton - born in Kilmarnock between 1840-1843.His parents are John Paton & Mary Beattie.
When he married in Agnes Barr 1873 in Pollkshaws, Glasgow , he said he was a widower. I can find no trace of a previous marriage.
He does not seem to be in the 1851,1861,1871,1881 census anywhere - although his wife and 3 children are living in Milngavie in 1881.The family appeared to be there until about 1896 as the youngest child was born in Glasgow. He died in Maryhill in 1908.
He was a carter at both his marriage & death - but an agricultural labourer on the 1891 & 1901 census.
There is no mention anywhere of his parents - or of any siblings.
If anyone can offer any suggestions I would be very grateful .

Hi Morag,
What was his occupation on his marriage record?
Also, have you made allowances for spelling variations of Paton?
Patton, Patten, Payton, Paiton to name but a few.

Thank you for your replies. I think I have covered all spellings - although you never know !
On both his marriage & death certificates his occupation was Carter , and on the 1891 &1901 censuses he was an agricultural labourer.
The other mystery about him is his mother - listed as Mary Beattie - not deceased in 1873 , but was in 1908 - I can find no trace of her either on census returns or a death certificate - although , again spelling may have a lot to with it !
This branch of the family didn't stick to traditional naming patterns - or if they did it was backwards - so no help there !
Anyway, thanks again and I will keep searching

Hi Morag,
Have you checked out this possibility?
1851
69 Broomland St, Paisley High Church, Renfrewshire
Jane Sheddon, 61, Head, born Irvine, Ayrshire
John Sheddon, 24, Son, born Kilburine, Ayrshire, Coal Agent
Janet Sheddon, 20, Daughter, born Kilburine, Ayrshire, Dress Maker
John Paton, 9, Visitor Nephew, born Kilburine, Ayrshire, Schoblar At House
Jane Paton, 7, Niece, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Schoolar At House
As far as I can tell, Kilburine doesn't exist. There are a number of Ancestry oddities on this entry. Could it be Kilbirnie? In which case it's not that close to Kilmarnock
Well, it was a thought. Could Jane be Mary's sister?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
It is certainly worth checking that one out - the problem with the name is that there are so many of them. My husband is hoping to go to Edinburgh soon - so it can go on his list of to dos !
Thanks again
