Hi everyone!! I'm new on here and am going to ask right away if anyone has any information on the Lyon family in Edinburgh in the late 1500s.
My gt. gt. grandfather William Scott Bruce married Mary Lyon of Baldernock in1825. I have traced the Lyon family back another 7 generations to Alexander Lyoun(sic) born in Edinburgh 23 July 1595 to Thomas Lyon. On the old OPR there are 2 strange words after Thomas Lyon and it could be 'Master Glamis' but I cannot make it out as I am not very good at old handwriting! I am going to try and post it on the gallery (but please bear with me as I can never get these things right first time)
I hope it does say this as i cannot find another Thomas in Edinburgh at this time. The one I think it could be is Thomas, son of Thomas Lyon and Agnes Gray, born Auldbar(?) about 1548.
I know I'm clutching at straws here as I cannot find out anything about Alexander either except that he married Margaret Affleck..
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you and best wishes Sheilah

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the welcome!!
I have tried your instructions to no avail! I downloaded the file from SP and it is in 'My Documents'. Tried to load into the Gallery and it wouldn't as it is only a document and not a jpg file. I have no clue what to do now!! Can I change the doc. to a jpg or......???
Sorry but have never done this before--only with photos which always works.
I would be grateful for help, please.
Thanks Sheilah x

Hi Sheilah,
I had a go at uploading that image as the original jpg, but the Gallery software told me that I had exceeded its pixel limit. So after a few goes with diffferent variations of it, I have uploaded the portion of it that includes Thomas Lyon.
Can anyone decipher this one?

Hi Sheilah
Welcome to Tallking Scot
Oh boy... there is secretary hand, and there is...this.
The writer appears to be more interested in ornamentation and the look of the thing rather than using writing as a form of communication!
It is a wonderfully artistic page, the flourishes and pen marks are fascinating and very assured, but what exactly it says....?
What parish was it from, Edinburgh Parish or elsewhere in the Edinburgh area?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Andrew, Thanks for loading that for me- I sure was stuck!!
Thanks everyone for looking at it!! I thought it was because I'd not had much experience on old handwriting that I couldn't decipher it---You've all made me feel so much better!!!!
It was Edinburgh Parish 685/01/0001 Baptised 23 July 1595
There is a pedigree resource file on the LDS site for Thomas Lyon but so far I havae been unable to link Alexander to him, unless I can make out that awful squiggle after Thomas Lyon on the OPR!!
I have looked at most sites that give lessons on secretary hand to no avail. Maybe someone will come along and give us more clues!. Meanwhile thanks to everyone who looked at it for me.
Take care Sheilah x
