Young family search
HI,
I have been researching my history for a few years now and im still asking at times for help! here i am again on the scrounge.
I have David youngs birth cert brn: 11/04/1756 from the OPR births. Davids parents are James young & Isobell Mathie. James is the one i am seeking infomation on, i have exuhasted everything i just cant seem to find his birth, death, nothing at all.
On the cert it says that the witnesses are David Kay and William Young, i assume that william is a brother or father to james but, without any info on james i really dont know..........so my brick wall needs knocking down.
Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,
I see that their son was born St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Were they married there too or have you not found their marriage?

These brick walls are there to make sure that we never give up searching our ancestors!
I see what you are up against.
James and Isobell don't seem to have had any other children recorded in Scotland which is no help at all.
The only Isobell Mathie marriage I could find was to a William Ross in 1753 in South Leith and St Cuthberts. Again not much help as I can't find any children who appear to belong to them both either.
Perhaps someone else can suggest something!
Good Luck!

Thank you for looking, someone else on another site also cant find anything. They looked through the whole of scotland for these people and like you came up with not a lot!! i wonder if they where out of the country and came home to have David????in 1756
This is a hard one and i will be glad when i find something, cant see that there would be no records at all, concidering that David is registered....surely one child is not the norm. I will have a look out of the country as in 1870 some family live in wyoming.
Oh i dont know this is a hard one!!
Thanks to you for your time and search

Here are thre William Youngs all born/baptised around the same time as your David (you thought that the William who was a witness might have been his brother).
WILLIAM YOUNG - International Genealogical Index - British IslesGender: Male Birth: 28 AUG 1750 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland - the parents were James Young and Margaret Gouldin
WILLIAM YOUNG - International Genealogical Index - British IslesGender: Male Birth: 03 OCT 1753 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland - parents James Young and Margaret Baall
WILLIAM YOUNG - International Genealogical Index - British IslesGender: Male Birth: 12 APR 1754 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland - parents James Young and Margaret Baall
I found these in the same IGI batch record (C119868) as the baptism for your David. One of them might be a half brother to your David. Remember that maternal death was very common in that time and so James Young may have married again following the death of his wife. That might be why you cannot find other siblings. It's an outside chance and I don't know how you could begin to prove it - perhaps look at the OPR records to see if witness names were the same?
Best of luck anyway.
Liz

I'm descended from Robert Coull and Janet Mathie who married in 1743 in Ferryden. I see you're searching for Coulls too.
