High Blantyre Cemetry

Post by Margaret » Sat Jan 19, 2008 10:53 pm

Hello everyone, Just a wee bit of trivia for those interested in Blantyre. In 2007 I visited Scotland after 57 years away and met up with my Morton cousins in around around Hamilton, Blantyre, Motherwell what a treat that was. During my time there I visited my Grandparents grave in High Blantyre cemetery and was told this story - at the entrace to the cemetery stands a very tall monkey puzzle tree, well the story goes that when my Grannie Morton died it was her favourite tree in her garden in Hardy Street, Blantyre so my Grandad took it and planted it next to her grave. Well as you can imagine it began to grow very tall so the gardeners of the time decided to move it to the front gate of the cemetery , so today some 70 years on it stands tall and proud. A lasting memory of my dear wee Grannie.
Cheers
