Wilyame Ross Errol 1584

Post by Highlander sa » Mon Jan 28, 2008 5:58 pm

Hi everyone, after a lot of research and help from a lot of different sources, i have finally traced my ross side back to a Wilyame Ross b 22 Mar 1584 in Errol Perthshire who married an Issobell Gordoun.
Wilyame father is down as a Jhone Ross but that is about it, no dates or anything, if anyone can help at all i would be very grateful
thanks
Steve Ross

Hello Steve,

That’s not a bad effort to get back to 1584, in fact you’re already about 200 years ahead of most people. I was thinking that if you’re around my age that’s at least 12 generations back from you which would probably make Jhone Ross about a 10x great grandparent. Perhaps you’ve been so successful because the family haven’t moved around a lot.

Records beyond that time are pretty skimpy and you may well have reached the inevitable dead end. In theory each person has 4,096 10x great grandparents (could that be right? – hopefully not all from the same small village), so if you have reached the end of the road with the Ross’s at least you don’t have to give up the pastime.

If you haven’t already tried you could try the free Wills search at ScotlandsPeople in the likely periods possibly using just J and W as the forename as you’re sure to find some strange spellings there. See if any of the locations fit with Errol.

All the best and good luck,
Alan
