Elizabeth Ogg (nee Leggat)

Post by SGEOJMP » Sun Feb 10, 2008 12:55 am

This lady was born in King Edward Aberdeenshire on the 21st June 1794. She married Alexander Ogg in Gamrie Banffshire on the 15th Oct 1815. Her third son was born in 1835. Her 4th son John Ogg was married in 1860. I have his marriage certificate where it indicates his Mother was Elizabeth Leggat (deceased). On John's death certificate it indicates his Mother as Jean Clark. I have tried to locate a death certificate for Elizabeth who must have died between 1835 and 1860 but have been unsuccesful. I likewise cannot find a birth certificate for John Ogg where his Mother is listed as Elizabeth Ogg (nee Leggat). There is a birth in 1844 to Alexander Ogg and Jean Clark but I cannot verify that this is my John Ogg, My thought is that maybe Elizabeth died in the process of delivering John and was brought up by Jane !! Can anyone out there help?

Annette - Thank you for your prompt reply. I agree that they are 2 different families. I am so confused. I have been doing genealogy for over 50 years and know my great grandfather is John Ogg but have never found a birth certificate. I have the birth certificate for my grandfather which is verified. On that certificate it shows his parents as John Ogg 7 Ann Adams who were married 30th June 1860. The marriage certificate is dated 1st July 1860 and his parents as Alexander Ogg & Betty Ogg, maiden name Leggat (dec) I have John's death certificate which I can verify as my cousin in Edinburgh visited his daughter in the Conon Bridge area many years ago. On this certificate his Mother is shown as Jane Clark. His wife Annie Ogg (nee Adams) was still alive but his daughter was the informant of his death. It could be that if his biological Mother was Elizabeth Leggat and died when he was a baby, then his daughter would only know her grandmother as being Jane Clark. Am I muddying the waters.

I have been to salt lake City. I have spent a fortune on Scotlands people but still not satisfied. Maybe I will never know.

Hi Stuart,

It's late and I'm tired and confused but thought I'd just through this out anyway.

You say that Elizabeth married Alexander 1815 and that their third son was born 1835, and the fourth, your grandfather, John was married 1860, which would give him an estimated birth year of around 1840 or so. Question...did Elizabeth and Alexander have a load of daughters born between their marriage in 1815 and their third son in 1835...that's a twenty-year gap!

I didn't come up with any Elizabeth's born in King Edward but did find the following that might fit in somewhere along the line...

1851 Census: Heugh Head
James Ogg....... 28..........Head...Farmer Of 32 Ae Employing 3 Lab...Aboyne, Aberdeenshire
Helen Clark.......11.........servant....house servant
William Clark.......52......servant.... Farm Labourer
George MacKie...... 33...lodger...sawyer
Elizabeth Ogg......... 58....Mother...Farmer's mother ...Aboyne, Aberdeenshire
Isabel Ogg............... 53...Aunt......Aboyne, Aberdeenshire
John Watt.............. 11....Servant...shepherd

...I then pulled up this one since the names Isabella and Elizabeth are interchangeable, but then realized that Alexander would have been born three years after he and Elizabeth got married...

1851 Census: Old Braes
Alexander Ogg 33 ...head...farm labourer...King Edward, Banffshire
Isabella Ogg 33 wife...Forgue, Aberdeenshire
William Ogg 11....scholar...Forgue, Aberdeenshire
Alexander Ogg 9 .....scholar...Forgue, Aberdeenshire
James Ogg 7 ...scholar...Keith, Banffshire
John Ogg 4 ...scholar...Keith, Banffshire

...well, I did say I was tired.

Doesn't help with John's birth but I'm pretty sure this is Alexander with John and new wife Mary McDonald.

Piece: SCT1851/153 Place: Fordyce -Banffshire Enumeration District: 2
Civil Parish: Fordyce Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Fordyce
Folio: 119 Page: 8 Schedule: 24
Address: Yondertown

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
OGG Alexander Head M M 53 Occupier 6 Ac Farmer Unknown - -
OGG Mary Wife M F 33 Banffshire - Fordyce
OGG John Son U M 9 Aberdeenshire - King Edward
OGG Hellen Daur U F 7m Banffshire - Fordyce

Are you sure you have the correct death entry for John? (Later...I see from your earlier post that Ann Adams is quoted as his wife so it must be)
Can't be positive without looking but I think he died in 1913 in Ross & Cromarty.

Annette
