HAIR FAMILY ...DUMBARTON CARDROSS SCOTLAND

Post by robbiej » Sun Feb 10, 2008 2:47 am

I have an old photo of my Mother's on which has "Tyemora" Cardross, Dumbarton is on the back, and am wondering if anyone knows of this place/house.
If it is still in existance??
This would have been taken in the 1915 era.
Also I have a Photo of my Mother's Home "lenzie" which I gather is in the same area taken about the same time.
These are all related to Wm B Hair family.B/ Feb,1862.D/1903 who was a House factor..
A shot in the dark I know, BUT...Can anyone around that area give me any info on these please?.

Hi Robbie

I was born and in a place called Helensburgh which is about 4 miles from Cardross.

Cardross is a very small village between Helensburgh and Dumbarton on the River Clyde.

I will try and find out where the house "Tyemora" is and if it is standing.

I have moved down to Surrey, England but still have family who I can ask in Scotland. My cousin lives in Cardross.

Regards Maragret

Hi Robbie

I foegot to say that Lenzie is in Kirkintilloch about 32 miles from Cardross. Just outside Glasgow.

If you want to find out the areas go to Goggle map uk and enter Cardross and Lenzie.

Best Wishes

Margaret

Thank you Margaret, I greatly apprciate that. :P
It would give me a real buzz if the places were still standing ! A reason also to make the effort and return to Scotland one day.
When I was there, my cousin took me out to try and find, but I don't think he was that intersted and whizzed around - just saying 'it isn't here !. I felt it was !! So I hope I am right !
Look forward to hearing from you.

House names

Post by AnnieMack » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:18 am

Robbie,

I had a look at Royal Mail for a house called/like Tyemora in Cardross and came up blank - does the photo show the house name or is it just written on the back?

If it is someones impression of the name could it be Tigh-ma-mara or Tighmonadh as these both exist to this day in Cardross. I could find nothing for a house called Lenzie in Cardross.

Let me know.

I have the Photo in front of me and Yes, it is written on the back by my Mother.
Grandmother Campbell's house,
(That is... Mary Watson Campbell B/Aug 1870, D/Feb 1913,St Andrews Home, Refrew St Glasgow)
Cardross, Dumbarton, Scotland. 'TYEMORA' CARDROSS.
Looking at the Photo - which of course is OLD !! It looks to be of stone, but not the HEAVY stone that one sees in the 'OLD joined togeher' housing, but a flat smoother stone. Between the two floors there is what looks to be ( 2 anyway, with possibly 3... with the 3rd hidden at the side) Crests or Big Leaf in a square, which are spaced out. and above and below these there is a heavy looking (looks like tube metal!) band which goes right around the house by the look of it..
It is a big double storied home with big bow windows on the left side both up and down stairs, both sets of windows by looking at it have a span of 5 windows,- with very ornate and what looks like maybe coloured glass patterned panes in the upper portion of these windows... and there is a pointed metal ? dome on the top of the upper one,
The roof has spikes along the top of it.
A Front porch with weather protection overhang is in the centre of the building with a big grecian urn on a stand by it, and a ballastrade of ? shaped things ! ...
Then to the right of this front door, is a set of 3 windows and on the upper storie, two windows.
These have 9 small glass panes above each window. They look to be plain glass.
On this upper part, above the two windows there is a pointed gable with what possibly could be an attic room. At this side of the house, there looks as if there could be another doorway as there is an top overhang which could be above a doorway.
6 chimneys... Tile ? or slate roof with spikes along the top. There are garden seats on either side in the front and the 'gardener' standing by the front door. Another 'urn' is in front of the set of 3 windows.

The Lenzie.....was on my Mother's Birth Cert, and I presumed it to maybe be a house, but I find that is not so - It is a Town about 1 mile South of Kirkintilloch. So that fixes that one !!
I hope it is still there and someone can find it for me. Must be 100 yrs old !!! Some hope I guess.
I could send a scanned copy of the photo (if that is possible here) if that would help.

Hi Robbiej

Could the spelling be incorrect on the back of the photo. I have found a Mary W Campbell on the 1881 census age 10 (which would be the same age) living at Tighmonadh Main Road Cardross. She has a sister Jean L also living there.

Tighmonadh is still listed in Cardross. Address from Royal Mail is:

Tighmonadh
Cardross
Dumbarton
G82 5HD

If someone could go a take a photo of this place then you might be able to look at both pictures and see if they are the same.

On the map this house is as you are coming into Cardross on the left.

If no one can manage to take a photo I will be going up to Scotland in the summer so I will have a look.

If I can get my cousin to go I will.

Best Wishes

Margaret

Hi Robbiej

I should have said the house is as you are coming into Cardross from Helensburgh on the right just of Cardross Road. I was looking at the map the wrong way.
