Craig & Swan

Post by GRANDMA JUDY » Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:26 am

Hi this is my first posting with you. Here goes.......
My gr gr grandmother was Janet (Jessie) Buchanan Craig b. Feb.7, 1820 to William Craig b. 1793 and Christian Swan. I have Jessie's birth registration. The Craigs I have been able to follow but the Swans are a challenge. I think I've come across Christian and her parents by luck BUT is there any way I can work through it to verify the information.
I found on another forum a family of John Swan and Christian Buchanan m. 1775 in Renfrew. They had many children and one was Christian Swan ch. 30.03.1793 Aberfoyle, Perth.
Now two difficulties - I cannot find Christian in the IGI under Aberfolyle, Perth, I don't know what I am doing wrong AND I cannot find a marriage for William and Christian Swan. I have a marriage date, Jan 15, 1819.... but not sure of my sources. There is another date on Familysearch but that is wrong and it is a submission so I'm not worried about it.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do next? Any help would be appreciated. Judy

Hi Judy,

A warm welcome to TalkingScot :) [scotland-flag]

I have a few families also that I'm trying to get some solid proof to confirm I have the right families...I've managed to confirm a couple of them, so far 8-[

I had a look on the IGI and also the BIVRI discs but couldn't find Christian either, other than the submission you mentioned. There is a Christian Swan on SP born in Aberfoyle, Perth in 1793...did you check that out?

I couldn't find an MC for William and Christian on the IGI, but there are eight Craig/Swan marriages on SP for the whole of Scotland between 1553 - 1854 but didn't come up with anything by putting in their Christian names. Did you look at any of those?

I expect you have noted these extracts...
Banns of John Swan and Christian....
9 Nov 1775 - New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton
11 Nov 1775 - Renfrew, Renfrew

Children's extracts...
Anne 1776 - Glasgow
Margaret 1778 - Glasgow
Alexander 1780 - Glasgow
George 1782 - Glasgow
Robert 1784 - Govan
David 1788 - Renfrew
Andrew 1790 - Renfrew

I would check these out on SP also - there's always the chance that there might be a little snippet of information that might help you along with your searches.

The only way I know of to confirm whether or not you have the right family is by checking all the records you come across on those you think might fit your family and by process of elimination. Good luck :)

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Ann, thank you for replying.
I had tried SP previously but with little / no luck using SP. I will try again.
What are the BIVRI discs?
I will look at the marriages as well...... just cannot do it today; other committments.

Why would there be banns in 2 different places?

John Swan and Christian Buchanan had 3 more children.....
Christian Swan bpt. 30.03.1793
Alexander bpt 14.2.1796
Mary bpt 25.6.1798
all apparently bpt. in Aberfolye, Perth. This set I could not find on the IGI either.
So I'll try again on SP.
Thanks again, Judy

Hi Judy
What are the BIVRI discs?
British Isles Vital Records Index, compiled by the LDS Church
see here
Why would there be banns in 2 different places?
Bride from one Parish, groom from another.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Judy,

I see Lesley answered your questions. The BIVRI discs are a good resource, as is the IGI, but as with the online IGI, the discs are not complete.

I did notice the submissions online for Christina, Mary and the other Alexander, but didn't find the extracts, either on the discs or the IGI. Submissions are good to possibly set you off in the right direction, but you really need to get the official records for confirmation.

Also, if you're near an LDS Family History Center you can order in the firms for a small fee...I've never actually gone that route yet.

I also checked ... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... #PageTitle

...but didn't see anything there either. Just giving you this as another resource for the future.

Regards,
Anne H

Ann,
What are the "firms" from the LDS centres. We have one here in Cranbrook, so I could go there..........

Thanks for your help.
