Just was introduced to this site at a meeting of the Alberta Genealogical Society, of which I've been a member for some six or so years. My maiden name is Dalrymple, and I've a real brick wall with regard to my great grandfather Robert Dalrymple -- am hoping someone may be able to help!
The information I have at this time, in brief, is:
-- Robert Dalrymple, born (or possibly baptized) 12 Feb 1794, Leslie, Fife
-- apparently he accidentally killed someone (a young acquaintance) in his youth and was sent to his grandfather's home; I have no record of whether this was his paternal or maternal grandfather
-- parents were John Dalrymple and Jean Will, who married 25 Nov 1785 in Kinglassie, Fife
-- Robert immigrated to Canada in 1809 aboard the ship Elodia, working as a cabin boy. The ship was captained by an Alexander Dalrymple who died at the age of 27
-- Robert's brother John, born (or perhaps baptized) 1798, also came to Canada
The two Dalrymple brothers settled in Montreal, Quebec, and I have considerable information on the two families after that, but have been unable to find anything on John and Jean either before or after a certain time in Leslie. Two Scots genealogy researchers, one in the 1970s and one a few years ago, both came up with John and Jean as the parents, but could not locate anything more.
The only thing I have, now, that may be of help is the story of Robert having killed an acquaintance. I have no name, just the situation, and if he was born in 1794 -- coming to canada in 1809 -- then that means this event happened a good bit before he was 15 years old.
There were other children in the family: Christian or Christiann, b 1786, who apparently died before 1796; Elisabeth, b 1788; George, b 1790; an earlier John, also b 1790, who must have died young (and likely was a twin; there were twins in the family line); Jean, b 1792; and another Christian/Christiann, b 1796.
As for Robert being only my great grandfather although he was born in 1794: his youngest son, James, b 1847 and the last of 12 children, was my grandfather. James, in turn, also had 12 children -- of two wives -- and my father, born in 1909, was the youngest of those 12, born when James was already 61! The fact that in so few generations, my family spanned so much time, has also made it difficult for my research.
If any links to my Dalrymple lines from Robert or John show up in Scotland, I have many items of information to share!
In hope and with thanks,
Lesley (Dalrymple) O'Neil

Welcome to Talking Scot
.
Sometimes we think we have skipped a generation when in fact families were spread across the years-I think my biggest gap was firstborn at 18(Mother's age & final birth at 49).Then I have one who had her first confinement at 53 when she gave birth to twins-my Granny was present at delivery & confirmed the tale.
Sorry can't help with your Dalrymples but I am sure there will be someone who can.
I would be name searching for free on ScotlandsPeople & Hugh Wallis's site using the Parish search to trawl through for clues.
Happy hunting & keep the queries coming we love to help.

Hello Lesley,
There are a couple of people interested in Fife Dalrymple’s at this site. See items 81 & 96.
http://www.fifefhs.org/Society/guestbooksurnames3.htm
Some Dalrymple variations from the Hugh Wallis site are DALRIMPL, DARLRYMPLE and DALYMPLE. Also DALRIMPLE from elsewhere.
You may find this Google Book interesting re Casual Homicide etc.

Hi, Alan, and thanks! I had actually run across Ms Muir (the #81 reference) recently elsewhere online, and am hoping to receive a response from her. Have contacted #96. Appreciate the book pages -- interesting references!Currie wrote:Hello Lesley,

On the name variations, yes, there are many, including Darrumple and Darrimple, which likely arose from pronunciation being transcribed phonetically at times. It does cause searching difficulty at times.
Thanks again.

Hello Lesley,
That’s probably the lady, 1st photo on 7th row from top (with the white hat). Email address appears to be different from the other one.

Thanks, Alan, will try her at that one. I believe I communicated with her some four years ago, now that I've had time to think about it -- perhaps she has something new. On Genforum, I've posted there quite a few times with disappointing results, but again, some time ago. Likely worth a new go-round.Currie wrote:Hello Lesley,

Well, all, I've tried and had no success. Sharon Dalrymple Gillespie has disappeared, or at least is no longer at any of the available email addresses. And I'd no response from M Muir.
Anyone else out there ???
Thanks to those who have tried to help!

Dalrymple
The name Dalrymple is linked to my family. I had a uncle James Dalrymple Landale. b around 1870 He was named after a relative.
Christian Landale married a Robert Dalrymple on May 29 1802. in Dysart, Fife, Scotland
Like your family my grandfather was born in 1872 and did not marry until he was 50....
My great grandfather was born in 1831.
Don't know if you have links to the Landale line, but like you I have hit many brick walls.
