Down the line from Donald MacNaughton

Post by karlmac » Sat Feb 16, 2008 6:38 pm

Donald MacNaughton was the eldest child of Neil MacNaughton 1789-1867 and Ann MacFarlane 1799-1879.
Donald was born May 25, 1826 in Island on Loch Eck, Argyllshire. He married, in Island, on June 6, 1862, Anne Cowan 1830-____, daughter of Duncan and Ann (MacLean) Cowan. Three children were born to the couple - 1. Ann May 6, 1863 - May 6, 1863; 2. Annie Cowan Feb. 15, 1865 - ____; 3. Isabella Mary )ct. 7, 1868 - Dec. 27, 1868.

In 1861 Donald was living with his parents in Driep on Loch Eck. When married he listed his occupation as spirit merchant and his residence Glasgow. On the birth of the first daughter his residence was 8 Gloucester St., Tradeston,Glasgow and he is described as a spirit dealers shopman. By Feb., 1865 the family had moved to 26 Findlay St., Blythswood, Glasgow and Donald is a railway servant. To and beyond 1871 they remained at the Findlay St. address but left there before 1881. In 1868 Donald is occupied as master flesher and in 1871 as a cotton factory porter - a varied career indeed. No trace of the family has been found after 1871.

My interest s are twofold.
1. What and where was the fate of Donald and Anne.
2. Did the second daughter, Annie Cowan MacNaughton, survive and, if so, what is her story.

Any help, no matter how peripheral, will be welcome.

Hi again,
Playing with the free search on Scotland's People, I see that there is a death in 1879 of an ann mcnaughtan (spelled just like that), born 1830, other surname cowan in Blythswood, Lanark

If I were you, I'd have a look :D

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Karl
and welcome to Talking Scot :D
in Island on Loch Eck, Argyllshire
I wonder if "Island" is actually Innellan, perhaps, on the Firth of Clyde?

Best wishes
Lesley

The IGI has him marrying at:
Marriage: 06 JUN 1862 Stralachlan, Argyll, Scotland
which is spelt Strathlachlan on modern maps. And just to further confuse, Scotlands People states the marriage was somewhere in Strachur district.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley :D

Since Inverary is on Loch Fyne, which is just next to Loch Eck, I thought the above census birthplace was "close enough"... maybe he was born on an island in the loch

Sarah

Hi Sarah
As far as I'm aware, there is no island in the loch. That is why it was puzzling.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi again,
In 1851 and 1861 his birthplace is given as Strachur, which is just between the two lochs, but closer to Loch Fyne.

Regards,
Sarah

Hmm... perhaps it is a name of a farm:
...and then up the east side of Loch Eck to arrive at Island Farmhouse in The Argyll Forest Park
....about 100 yards from the shore of Loch Eck and about 7 miles south of Strachur

Looks likely!

and
Island Farm

Island Farm, between Whistlefield and the head of the Loch, is named after the islet a short distance offshore, in summer the resting place of seagulls. This isle, in the stormy days of warfare, is said to have been the hiding place for Mac Cailein's (Campbell of Argyll's) man on his way to the "Paper Cave" with the title deeds of the family estates. On this islet he lay in hiding, unobserved by the scouts who had been sent to capture him.

There is even a painting of it here:

Sounds very likely! His father was a farmer in 1851.

Nice sleuthing, Lesley :D
