Ancestry has just put online the newly digitised WW1 cards held by the Western Front Association. But are they complete? On the TNA site, there are 29 Patons listed, but Ancestry only has four.
The images that I have been able to find are considerably better than the TNA site, being in colour and also showing the backs - I just found an Inverness address on the back of the card for my great uncle Charles MacFarlane, confirming it is him. But it would be good to know if the site is being rolled out over a period of time, or if we are about to endure a whole new set of Ancestry transcription errors!
The full press release is at

Hi Chris,
Thanks for informing us. I didn't realise that Ancestry managed to get hold of them, i thought they were still at NA. So have they just rescanned/imaged them?
EDIT
Hmmm.. just had a look for my two great great unles, William & John Greenlees but no luck.
Just to clear things up. Chris is it all the medal index cards or just some that have been imaged.

Hi Pandabean,
I have just found the following on the Western Front Association website at
http://www.westernfrontassociation.com/news/:
"Over the coming months we will be providing full access to the Medal Index Cards on the WFA website, along with access to the complete and full archive.
At the present time there is a limited access to the cards via the Ancestry website."
None of this is mentioned in the Ancestry press release, so it looks like a phased release.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the heads-up

I did find one for my grandfather's brother but only because I knew his service numbers, and that confirmed I had the correct record. Unfortunately, since there aren't any addresses or other clues on the cards, I couldn't find anyone else with the numbers I do have....hopefully, I'll have better luck when they put the others online.
Regards,
Anne H
