Hi Lesley,
There is a Thomas Wilkie on the ship Caledonia arriving in New York from Glasgow on 18 April 1914
He is 23, single, a chauffeur. His nearest relative in Scotland is:
sister Margaret Wilkie, 87 Montgomery St, Edinburgh. There are no family or friends waiting for him in the U.S.. He was born in Edinburgh, was 5'9" tall with fair hair and blue eyes.
Sound like a good match?
All the best,
Sarah

Later: The chauffeur Thomas says, in his WWI draft Registration card, that he was born 1 November 1890-- or so the index says... the month is basically unreadable on the image. By then (5 June 1917) he is living in Essex County, New York.

There was also a Thomas Wilkie, age 29, born in Edinburgh, 5'4", red complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, who was refused admission to the U.S. from Canada in 1919. DEBARRED is stamped on his entry, then it looks as if someone has written in "approved by appeal" above his name. His last address was Juniper Green, Scotland, friend there Rebecca Steinman
He had no friend or relative that he was joining, but said he was going to Standish, Michigan.
He appears on another page with others whose entrance is pending, on appeal, File 11078, No. 2147

The only Thomas I can find in 1920 was working in a motor car factory in Detroit, Michigan. No sign of one in New York.

There are two likely Thomases in 1930
One runs a hotel in Los Angeles
The other works in a garage in San Francisco. However, this one died 21 Dec 1977 in San Francisco and the death record says he was born 7 Dec 1889. He is also listed as Thomas B Wilkie, so perhaps he can be ruled out.

No obvious death record for the hotel keeper-- perhaps he went to another state, or died before the index starts in 1940.

Regards,
Sarah

Hello Sarah Many thanks for taking the time to look

he does have a sister Margaret the last address I had for her was her fathers death 1913 at 11 Albert Place Edinburgh I reckon if any he would be the taller blonde one as we are all tall and fair mainly
the middle name is MAIN with his father being a cab driver and the rest of family in coach hire business in Edinburgh he may have chosen this as an occupation I am going to go on Scotlands People again

again many thanks Lesley in Tassie
PS just did a check on his birth it was 6 NOV 1890 !@ 3 Albert St Edinburgh and he is the only one born that year in Edinburg
I did not do before as I knew it was him and till now the actual day has not been important I fee sure he is the one ....he has not got middle name on birth cert only in census so he may have ditched it or gone from his birth cert for info just had a look at google maps and Montgomery st is only a couple a way from Albert st
I am very very grateful for your help
.. you little ripper !
