Post by Renee Hughart » Fri Feb 22, 2008 8:36 am

Hello Everyone:

I am new to your site and looking for information on my family. Wondering if I am part of your Barr family.

My father: Robert Pattison Barr was born May 23, 1906

Grandfather: Andrew King Barr - born July 7, 1882 Leith Scotland
Died in Long Beach Ca. USA - April 1m 1947

Great-Grandfather: James Barr-born 1842 Renfrew, Scotland
Died -June 5, 1911 Port Glosgow

I am looking for any information on Gilmour/Copeland/Ptolomey/Pattison
and Barr

My dad's youngest sister was named:
Elizabeth Gilmour Copeland Barr

My grandparents followed the Scottish way of naming their 5 children

Hello Renne,

I take it your James Barr, born 1842, Renfrew, was married to Elizabeth Copeland, if so then i suggest you start another thread by pressing the New Topic, at the top of this section and put your request there, the reason i doubt very much if your Barr's, are related to the Barr's, being discussed in this thread and it may cause confussion if i or some other member were to answer the post on this thread.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi Renee

Welcome to TS [talkingscot]. Jonn's advice is very good. Start a thread with your people and I'm sure that soon someone will come up with some ideas and possibly even links for you.

All the best

James Barr - Born in Renfrew - 1842

Post by Renee Hughart » Fri Feb 22, 2008 11:39 pm

Thank you both for answering me.

The reason I wondered about our Barr's being in the same family is because the only information I have on James Barr (my great-grandfather) is he was born in 1842, Renfrew. Died June 5, 1911 in Port Glasgow.

His wife was Elizabeth Gilmour Copeland who he married on April 29, 1852 in Renfrew. She was born in 1839 in Port Glasgow
Died January 5, 1916 in Leith.

They had 12 children but I only know about my Grandfather
Andrew King Barr who was born July 7, 1882 in Leith.

I should start that new thread in hopes of someone who might have information about this James Barr & thus find some of those other children??

Would you keep my information just incase you come across other Barr's?

Can not tell you how delighted I am to have found this site & have the link to the land where my father was born. His name was Robert Pattison Barr born May 23, 1906 in Greenock.

My dream is to come to Glasgow, Greenock & Renfrew. Spend time in that marvelous library in Glasgow, walk through the street where my great-grandparents walked.
Thank you again. Renee

Yes, tell us what you already have (i.e. censuses, birth & marriage records) and what you have been unable to find and would like help locating. We all enjoy a little detective work!

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Renee

Here are what I am sure are your Barrs in 1871:

Living in Orchard Street Renfrew,

James Barr aged 29 Boilermaker born Renfrewshire
Elizabeth Barr Wife aged 30 born Lanarkshire
Jean Barr Daur aged 8 Scholar born Renfrewshire
Elizabeth Barr Daur aged 7 Scholar born Renfrewshire
Robert Barr Son aged 7 Scholar born Renfrewshire
John Barr Son aged 5 Scholar born Renfrewshire
Isabella Barr Daur aged 1 month born Renfrewshire

I think you will find they were married in 1862 rather than 1852.

How am I sure that is them? Well if you look at Elizabeth's death certificate you will see that it is signed by her son-in-law James Westwood. Looking for a Westwood/Barr marriage produces the marriage of James with 23 year old Jane Barr in 1886. A witness is Bella Barr. Jane has the right parents which means that in 1871 there should be a Jane or Jean Barr born around 1863 with one would expect a sister called Bella and so there is.

So there you are already lots of other children to find out more about and I'm confident there will be more later. Have you looked up the censuses and birth death and marriage records on Scotland's People?

Anne

PS By 1881 they are in Leith and have additional children

Barbara aged 8 born Renfrew
Ellen aged 4 born Renfrew
James aged 3 born Renfrew
Margaret aged 1 born Leith

Also with the family is James's brother Colin aged 22 born Renfrew and a parent search on the International Genealogical Index on the Family Search site also reveals a sister for James called Barbara born in 1838 in Renfrew.

Hope all of this starts you off in the right direction.

By the way, if you look for young Barbara Barr in the 1851 census you will find a whole load of brothers, sisters and even an aunt and some cousins for good measure for your James Barr.
:D :D :D

Thought the easiest thing was to make this into a new thread. Hope I have not managed to wreck anything!!
