Hi everyone.
Can some kind person point me in the right direction of finding an old map of Crieff. I have ancestors living at Church Street, Petenger, Crieff. I was just wondering where Petenger would have been.
Many thanks in advance
Regards
Anne

Crieff

On a current Crieff map there is a street called Pittenzie Road which is near Church Street. I live near Crieff, I will try and find out how they pronounce this as maybe the Pittenger has been the writer's interpretation of the speakers pronunciation - if you see what I mean

Hi Annie,
That would be great, I am sure your right as it is probably a pronounciation thing.
Can I be really cheeky and ask if you know of another address, East end Toll Bar again in Crieff. Just managed to find some census records and these are the addresses on them.

Again Many Thanks
Anne.

Hi Ann

Try this link for old maps it has 7 for Creiff dating from 1866 to 1930's

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/GAZPAGES/GazTownCity.aspx

I think Annie could be right with Pittenzie, if you think about the way z was written at one time.
In the Pittenzie area on the maps there are a couple of churches.

Hope this helps

Ps Ann just tried this link and you get an OOPS! message but just click on the Old Maps logo Sorry
Aw the best and happy huntin'

Hi Roy,
Thank you for the link although I also got the oops page. I will close the browser and try again. The pronouciation could be out and it would explain why even when you google it nothing comes up. When I have googled place before it normally brings something up, but not a bean on Petenger.

Hi Anne

There used to be a tannery in the same area that you are looking at.

I don't know about the east end toll bar but the crieff muthil road used to be a toll road as one of my ancestors was toll keeper there.

I would agree with others that what you are looking for is pittenzie street, my late fathers hunting ground as a small boy he started his schooling at the taylors institution just up the road in 1930ish

Hi Bruce,
Thankyou for your input. I got the address "Petenger" from the 1841 census, and as you all say it must be Pittenzie St. the address before is Church St, so stupidly I thought that it was part of that, and was a property, on looking again, I notice that a lot of families (a whole page) are living there too so I am sure you are all right.
On East End Toll Bar, again this is from the 1841 census. Would that mean that my ancestors were Toll Keepers. As in a road toll as with the M6 toll.

Regards
Anne.

If your ancestor's occupation was listed as toll keeper it is very probable that is so. The Crieff to Muthil road at the other end of Crieff was a toll road or turnpike back then. There is a book somewhere and I can't remember where but it documents the trouble at Dunkeld over the toll's that were imposed by the Duke of Atholl on the bridge over the Tay at Dunkeld.

Yours Aye

Hi Bruce,
Again Thank You. that is amazing. I never thought of my ancestors doing something like that. Most from that area were either quarry men or the good one ag labs. oh and a shepherd.
People on here are really helpful, and I have learnt a lot from them, and this is just another instance.

Regards
Anne.

Try this

--> Link to Google Books :: The Topographical Picture of Glasgow in Its Ancient and Modern State :: pages regarding Crieff area <--

If you read the page this link refers to it details a journey and mentions East End Toll Bar in relation to other roads/places. You might be able to narrow it down further.

Annie :D

Had a look at the current streetmap version of the area and think I can narrow it down to the area of Gilmerton as being the east end toll bar. Interesting!
