Hi Margaret
Not sure where you have looked already - have you tried a search on IGI? www.familysearch.org or Scotlands People; link at top of page.
Have you found her marriage in 1862 on SP? That should give you her parents' names and that will make your search for her birth a little easier. Also the 1851 & 1861 census should give you a better idea of which area she was born; have you tried a search for her there?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Nothing showing on IGI that I can see and I haven't looked for her death yet. Ancestry not giving me any clues. :)

Hi Margaret
Have you downloaded the marriage entry from SP? (Ancestry is probably not the best place for the real nitty gritty on Scottish research...) With the parent names, finding the birth should be easier. Also the marriage will alert you to which church they belonged to - if it was not Church of Scotland, then it is likely you may not find her on SP or IGI, though there are exceptions.

Where does she give as her place of birth on census returns?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

She is still alive in 1901 and living in Glasgow Dennistoun with her husband and some children. George is a tailor. She gives Newmills as her birth on one census and Aberdeen on another. I haven't got the marriage certificate for them.

She is mother-in-law to my father-in-law's father! They ssem to be Congrgational by her daughters's marriage details.

That would be the next logical step - armed with her parent's names, the church or minister who conducted the marriage (if congregational that might explain the problem finding the birth) and you will also see the age she gave at the time of her marriage; not always accurate, granted....but can be helpful!

Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. not seeing anything obvious on IGI either, as you had noted, but not sure how we'd know her if we saw her without some idea of the parents' names. Are there any clues to be gleaned from her childrens' names?

There are a few Margaret McGregors on Freecen in 1851, but all of Aberdeenshire is not transcribed yet for that year. None looking obvious, but again it is difficult to know if she is showing or not without some idea of parents' names.

On SP there are only three people called Margaret M*cGregor in Aberdeenshire between the ages of 8-12 in 1851 (there are no "Megs" or "Maggies" of that age), so in theory she should not be too hard to find with her family.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Margaret,

If she's this one in 1851, you're out of luck in terms of finding the parents, since she's in a home or school of some sort. The logical thing to do is see what she says on the marriage certificate. I don't see any born in Newhills in that census.

1851
The Boys and Girls Hospitals of Aberdeen
Margaret McGregor, 10, Pupil, born Abdn, Aberdeensh

Or, could be this one with both parents:

1851
35 Lock St, Aberdeen West, Aberdeenshire
Donald McGregor, 45, Head, born Fortrose, Rosshire, Hand Loom Weaver (linen)
Elizabeth McGregor, 48, Wife, born Old Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
Catherine McGregor, 14, Daughter, born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Girth Weaver
Margaret McGregor, 10, Daughter, born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scholar
Margaret Barker, 38, Sister-in-law, born Old Aberdeen, Wool Worker

Donald has perhaps died by 1861:

35 Loch St, Aberdeen St Nicholas
Elizabeth McGregor, 35, head, born Old Machar, Aberdeenshire, Flax Winder
Margaret McGregor, 20, Daughter, born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Flax Weaver

Again, the marriage cert should give her occupation as well as her parents' names, so would tell you if you have the right one in the census. I really don't think you have much choice but to look it up, if you want to be sure you have the right family, since it is only at her marriage that you are sure it is the right Margaret McGregor.

All the best,
Sarah

Thank you for your time Lesley and Sarah. You both seem to have found the same Margaret's details that I have. Will have to send for mariage cert to prove definitely who her parents were.

Kind regards to all,

Margaret

Margaret

You don't have to send for the marriage certificate, you can look at it (& download it if you want) on Scotlands People - see link at the top of the page. It's a pay per view site but very reasonable at £6 for 30 credits. It'll cost you 1 credit to look for the marriage in the index & another 5 to look at the certificate, leaving you 24 credits to go wild with!! Beware, though, it's addictive!
