Looking for Descendants of John Sutherland Robertson

Post by JMRobertson » Tue Mar 04, 2008 10:02 pm

Hello,

My name is Jennifer (Robertson) Linn and I am searching for descendants of John Sutherland Robertson, my grandfather.

My grandfather was born 22 Nov 1895, Aberdeen Scotland, to James and Mary Ann (Davidson) Robertson. He married in or about 1917, Barbara Ann Johnston, daughter of James Johnston and Isabella Sutherland.

Together they had 2 children, John Douglas Davidson Robertson(b. 1917-1918) and Isabella Barbara Robertson(b 1924).

My grandfather emigrated to the US in Dec 1928/Jan 1929. In 1930, his wife and two children followed. On the 1930 US Federal Census, all four are listed as living on Massachusetts Ave, Lexington, MA, USA. After 1930, the wife and children disappear, no other info has been available. My grandfather died 15 Jan 1975, Canton, Massachusetts, USA. He is buried at the Canton Corner Cemetery, Canton, MA, USA.

In 1934 My grandfather remarried and had 4 more children, including Ronald Douglas Robertson (my father)

I don't know much about my Scottish Roots or Robertson name and would like to know if there are any descendants of this family and if they would like to correspond. All I want is to know about my family.

Thankyou to anyone that my be able to help me find my Scottish roots! :D

You can email me at anytime!

Thankyou

Jenn

Hi Jenn
...and welcome to Talking Scot. :D

I'm afraid we can't help you trace living relatives. But we can probably help you travel backwards to find out more about your Scottish Roots. Not sure where you haev looked already - have you tried Scotlands People?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello,

I have been able to trace John S. Robertson to his parents, James Robertson and Mary Ann Davidson. I have both of their parents, but from there I get lost.

All the Sutherland's and Robertsons intermarry! Yikes!

Parents of James Robertson:
James Cromarty Robertson and Jean Sutherland

Parents of Mary Ann Davidson:
Daniel Davidson and Isabella Paul

Then I am stuck!

I was just hoping against hope that maybe one of my grandfather's descendants would be reading the inquiry. Maybe someday, I'll find them!

But, going further back for the Robertson is a goal of mine, as my grandfather didn't speak of his life prior to America. I do know that he played the bag pipes! Sorry, it's exciting for me, I'm a Yank! :D

Thanks,

Jenn

Hi Jenn
There is a marriage in 1861 showing on Scotlands People for Daniel Davidson & Isabella Paul in Aberdeenshire. That marriage entry would give the parents of both parties. Scotlands People is a pay per view site where you can download copies of the original full entries.

Also in 1865 there is a marriage in Aberdeenshire of a James Robertson & a Jane Sutherland (Jane & Jean are often interchangeable in Scotland) Difficult to tell if it is the correct one as his middle name does not appear to be mentioned.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jenn

Can I extend the hand of friendship from all of us on TalkingScot.
Unlike me(a stay-at-home) many members are spread across the globe and some have made contact with other relatives who have started out searching for their Scottish roots.
I think the Scottish Tourist board should thank us for stimulating lots of folk to come and visit their ancestral homeland. Perhaps there is not money to be made in tourists searching ancient burial grounds in odd corners of the country.
To see if anyone else is looking for family lines with the same names as yours try the 'Search' facility in the top banner headline. Just put a name into the 'Search' box and trawl through all the posts it brings up.
Who knows what will emerge :? :D

We love helping people find the elusive ancestor - and it's even more fun when a skeleton pops out of the closet

Ah, so the marriage of James Robertson & Jean Sutherland on IGI for 20 FEB 1868 Walls And Flotta, Orkney, Scotland would seem to be the more likely one. It is also showing for 1868 on SP.

Best wishes

Thankyou for the warm welcome! I am glad I found this site, all the way over here in Massachusetts, USA!

I'm almost afraid what will come out of this closet! The family stories are pretty scary at times!

Well, some of those names sound familiar. I have copies of John S. and wife's marriage, as well as both their birth records. I also managed to find the marriage record for James Cromarty Robertson and wife Jean Sutherland. I haven't ordered the last one yet.

My grandfather was proud to be a Scot! He had such an accent!
When I was 2 1/2 I was at his house, my sister and 2 older cousins were climbing the crabapple tree and I wanted to do it too. So, I started to climb on the box that the older girls had used and all of a sudden, my grandfather is saying, "Don't climb that tree, Lassie".

That is the only memory I have of him, he died 2 weeks after I turned 3. I think of him all the time! :)

In 1901 it looks like your grandfather was living at Walls, Orkney with his parents and brothers - Oliver S, born about 1899 and John W, born about 1892.

Thankyou, but I think it was supposed to be James W., as I found a birth record for James William Robertson born in 1892.

James William is another mystery. I cannot find any information regarding his death at all. If he were alive today, he'd be, ummm, VERY OLD!!! :D 116yrs!

Thank you everyone who is searching for me! THis information is making my searching easier, just have to sort it all and hopefully present to my father, his family history! [woohoo]
