glacken
I am trying to find more information about my Irish ancestor, Hugh Glacken. He is showing in one on the census living in Glasgow, as born in Derry Ireland about 1801. I have checked Google map and there are several Derry's so I don't know where to go from here.

Hello Hg,
I’m not sure I’m the best one to be answering this as I’ve more or less abandoned my Irish ancestors.
Hugh Glacken is a most uncommon name and when you google it you don’t get many results.
Here’s a reference to an 1829 Glasgow court case resulting in 7 years transportation. You would imagine there would be some sort of connection to that gentleman.

A posting elsewhere which gives Hugh’s wife’s name as Catherine.

In the next result there’s mention of a Hugh and Catherine Glacken being witness at an 1869 wedding at RC parish of Termonamongan, Diocese of Derry

The next site mentions Griffiths valuations and has a couple of names.
Glacken Hugh, Derrygarve Artrea Derry
Glackin Hugh, Ballymaguigan Artrea Derry

This individual on WorldConnect also has some Hugh’s and yet more places.

But whichever way you look at them they all seem to have a connection with Londonderry in Co. Tyrone. Perhaps contacting the individual on WorldConnect to see what info they have might be the best way to go.
Hope this helps and Good Luck.
Alan

Hello Alan,
Thank you very much for the information. I was pleased someone had at last responded. I have had a message on the message board at Ancestry.com for ages, then I found this forum.
As for the links you sent, I have looked and I think some of them are my ancestor but the last one on Worldconnect is a bit dubious. The only one that is a possibility has him getting married to Elizabeth McWilliams in 1835 and I already know he married Catherine in Glasgow in 1831.
As I said before, I am not sure if the Derry mention in the census refers to Derry in Northern Ireland as I believe there are more than one.
Once again, thanks for all your help.
Helen
