William Stewart Orr & Annie Craig - Kilbirnie, Ayrshire

Post by kinsearcher » Sun Mar 16, 2008 5:01 pm

William Stewart Orr and Annie Craig from Kilbirnie families and settled in Mt Sterling, North Carolina.

Williams dob is given as 1857 dod as 1889. (He died young - 32 - through a logging accident.)
Conflicting information I've received gives his mother's name as Janet Orr, another Mary Orr.

I'm struggling to get both father and mother for William.

Is there anyone 'doing' Orrs?

Thanks for any assistance.

James.

Hi Kinsearcher,

The online IGI gives the mother's name as Mary Orr, with no father named (presumably illegitimate), and birth date 15-Nov-1857. The birth certificate should be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a small fee. If you are lucky, there may be an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries naming the father.

I am doing Orrs, but my lot are all in Shotts / Harthill area of Lanarkshire.

All the best,

Hi James,
Is William this one in 1861?

1861
W Lochridge, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire
James Orr, 78, Head, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Farmer of 88 Acres
Margt Orr, 64, Wife, born Largs, Ayrshire
Mary Orr, 46, Daughter, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire
Robert Orr, 29, Son, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Formerly Clerk Spirit Shop
Isabel Orr, 25, Daughter, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Dairy Maid
Elisabeth Orr, 21, daughter, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Domestic Servant
William Orr, 3, Great Grandchild, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire
Thomas Calderwood, 30, Servant, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Ploughman
John Mildoun, 16, Servant, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Agl Labourer

In which case his birth should easlily be found on Scotland's People. The extracted record from the IGI gives his mother as Mary Orr, presumably the Mary in the census above. If you're lucky the father's name will be given in the Statutory Birth record. Otherwise... at least you have the mother's name! If he went by the name Orr, it is likely that the father never admitted paternity and he may never have known who he was :(

All the best,
Sarah

Snap, Andrew!!

I see the confusion now.

In 1871 there are two entries for William.

One, living with grandmother Margaret, with uncle Robert as head of household:

William Orr, 13, nephew

The other is this family, where Janet is the same age as Mary in 1861, but a different birthplace...

1871
Bank Street, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire
Janet Orr, 56, Head, born Mondlton, Ayrshire, News Agent
Helen Orr, 37, Daur, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Anting Mistress
Jeanie Orr, 32, Daur, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Mill Worker
Deborah Orr, 18, Daur, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Mill Worker
William Orr, 13, born Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scholar

Back to 1861, THERE ARE TWO WILLIAM ORRS AGE 3!!!!

The other is indeed with mother Janet and sisters Deborah, Jean, Helen, etc. So he's another one. If you are sure of his middle name, then he is Mary's son, not Janet's

The other has no middle name and is the son of William Orr and Janet McTwiggan in the IGI.

Regards,
Sarah

Sarah, thank you. Yes, confusion, and hard 'to see the wood for the trees' after one has been poring over if for (maybe) too long.
Part of my confusion came from the posting on Rootsweb's McEwing Message Board by second poster (can't contact now as email address is defunct) and poster 3 who I am getting in touch with.
