glacken

Post by hg » Mon Mar 17, 2008 11:05 pm

I am trying to find information about my gggrandfather Hugh Glacken. born about 1801 in 'Derry' Ireland according to the 1841 Scottish census he was living in Sindey Street Lanarkshire. He married Catherine McCartney ne MacAnally. They had a son called Peter (my ggrandfather). Hugh, William, John, Margaret, and Agnes were their other children.

I am trying to find his parents names and his roots.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hello,
Is he the Hugh Glacken age 61, born Ireland, Cotton Weaver, living in the City Parish Poorhouse in Central District, Glasgow Barony in 1861?

If so, since he lived past 1855, you should be able to find his death certificate on Scotland's People-- where his parents' names should be indicated (always assuming the poorhouse people knew). Also, given the wonderful data that is often on the poorhouse applications, you just might strike it lucky finding that record. They are to be found in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. Any chance of you making it up there in the near future? If not, someone might be able to look for you if you ask v-e-r-y nicely :D

All the best,
Sarah

Thanks for that Sarah.

I found Hugh Glackens death certificats on Scotlands People, I am afraid it does nat have his parents names on there.

The tip about the Mitchell Library is very useful though. I have family who live in Scotland (but not Glasgow) perhaps one of them could try looking for me. Otherwise I will take your tip of asking very nicely.

Helen
