Hi Sara
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
Can you maybe tell us a couple of things to help us to help you:
1. About what year you know this building to have existed
and
2. In what context you have seen it mentioned; is it on a birth, death or marriage extract, or censua, or somewhere else?
Could this be it?

I was in the right area, but not the exact building I was thinking of. I was thinking of the Brand Place, the building in front of Beggs Buildings, with unique open fronted tenement with ironwork supporting the landings.

Beggs Buildings can be seen on old OS street map at
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/edinburgh500_ne.html
Then select sheet III.8.3 from near the bottom centre.
On that map, Beggs Buildings can be seen near the bottom centre.
Looking at the amps on www.old-maps.co.uk Beggs Buildings were still there in 1931. On looking at the current map on the City of Edinburgh Planning Department's map Begg's Buildings are no more. This is verified by looking at the aerial view on Microsoft Live Search Maps.

It looks like the grassy area in the centre of this view is the site of Beggs Buildings.
All the best,
AndrewP
