Placename in Abernethy parish (1826)

Post by alisonyule » Tue Mar 25, 2008 4:13 pm

My ancestor David Bennet was baptized in January 1826. The OPR entry for Abernethy (Perth) states "David Bennet in Mount wherry had a child baptised named David."

I've looked everywhere for Mount Wherry (Google, old maps in Nat. Library of Scotland, old Ordnance Survey Maps) - not a single hit. There is a Mount Pleasant near Newburgh, but no other Mounts in Abernethy parish that I can see. Some of the other places mentioned on the same sheet of the OPR are Carpow, Pitlour, East Greenside. Could Mount Wherry have been a farm name? Has anyone any ideas? Perhaps I should get in touch with Abernethy Museum. I did email them, but no-one has replied yet. Perhaps they're closed for the winter.

If anyone can help, I should be most grateful.
Many thanks
Alison

Hi Alison:

Perhaps you might try a process suggested by AndrewP in response to another similar question http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=

Hi Alison,

Is your spelling imagination at the ready? In old Scots, it is common for wh and quh to be interchangeable. So I put this one to you - Mountquharry.

--> Current OS map showing Mountquharry <--

All the best,

Andrew,

That is really brilliant! Thank you. I'd tried the free census headers for 1851, but they didn't tell me anything. Abernethy was only a village of 600+ (?) at that time so there wasn't a town plan on the net.

When I come up to Fife in the summer I must drive up to take a look at the area where David (Weaver and Salmon Fisher) Bennet was born.

Again, your help is much appreciated
Alison
