It has been so long since I used this I now cannot get it right.
Will some kind soul guide me through the process please?

Hello Elizabeth,
Irfanview is a great free image viewer but can be used for many different things. One of the things I like it for is its batch processing, renaming etc where you rename a whole bunch of photos “Trip to Newmarket 001 etc.” or whatever or resize them or embed the file name onto a margin of the photo, heaps of things. It has a great many settings and options and will open just about any type of picture file on the planet and will even play MP3s. It’s probably best to get the latest version from the Irfanview site and the plugin pack. http://www.irfanview.com/
So I’m not sure what it is you need help with Elizabeth. If it’s just to use it as a viewer here’s what I usually do. I right click the picture icon and in the “send to” section Irfanview (the squashed red cat) will probably be visible, click on that. The photo will display and at the top toolbar you’ll see two arrows you can use to move from photo to photo. You’ll also see a button with 6 small coloured squares called thumbnails.
Clicking the thumbnail button will show the thumbnails and a folder tree. Clicking any folder in the tree will display thumbnails of any photos contained therein. You can change the size of these thumbnails by, at the top, clicking on options/change thumbnail options and make them much larger than a normal thumbnail so you can easily view them and quickly scroll through the whole folder. When you get the thumbnail display set up to how you like it you can save it via options/Save current window etc.
To display one of the thumbnails in the main window just double click it. To select how the images are displayed click on view/display options. If you are looking at newspaper images you might want to fit window to image but for photos you might want to fit image to window for example. For information about the image click the “i” button. To change setting and other options and to add toolbar buttons etc click on Options/properties.
Hope this helped but post back for any clarification.

Hi elizabeth
Just to mention - there is a bug in the latest version of irfanview which has been annoying me - when you resize an image on screen (using the +/- keys) some of the image disappears. There are a few methods to get around it (If I want a blowup of some text I have taken to using the crop) not all of which I understand too well. I am told it has been reported/discussed & hopefully will be fixed soon. I'm thinking of reverting to the previous version which my computer whiz husband says he has stored somewhere

Hi Trish,
I am also having trouble with it, I cannot shrink anything. I downloaded a 1733 birth and a message appeared "I had not enough memory"? Of which I was not aware of, but I did clean out my computer as much as I could, Went back to my OPR birth and now it comes appears as "Paint" which is just as bad!
I thought it had to be my fault and decided to leave it alone.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention Trish.

Because there are so many different things you can do with Irfanview and so many different ways of doing them many people won’t come across these bugs. I’ve struck problems with previous versions but the current one has been alright for me so far.
If the current version is causing problems you can get old versions of Irfanview (and many other programs) from http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=irfanview
(Trivia: Did you know that if you go to options/properties/toolbars and click on Gorsburg_24 you’ll get a nice new set of toolbar buttons)
